Riju

From Koei Tecmo Wiki

Riju is a playable character in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Chieftain of the Gerudo 100 years into the future in Breath of the Wild at her young age, Riju, along with her sand seal Patricia, are summoned to back to the time of the Great Calamity to protect the Gerudo Champion and previous Chieftain Urbosa from Thunderblight Ganon and keep Divine Beast Vah Naboris in Hyrulean control.

Role In Game

During the Great Calamity, Urbosa finds herself struggling against Thunderblight Ganon inside Vah Naboris. Despite her best skills and swordplay, the Shard of Calamity Ganon was too fast and agile to be struck, even with her lightning, and she soon found herself in trouble, finally collapsing to one knee in exhaustion as she sees Thunderblight Ganon move in for the kill. However, before she can be slain, Thunderblight Ganon is intercepted and rammed from the flank, knocking it off-course, by Riju and Patricia as they emerge from a time portal to save Urbosa. Treating Urbosa with the utmost respect with calling her "Lady Urbosa", Riju suggests they focus on the battle at hand dealing with Thunderblight Ganon.

However, even with Riju and Patricia helping her, Urbosa finds Thunderblight Ganon is still too fast and agile for them. Riju feels she let the older Gerudo Chieftain down with wanting to protect her, but when Urbosa notices that Link has arrived, she comforts Riju and assures her she bought them enough time, pointing out Link's arrival to the younger Gerudo Chieftain. Now aided by Link, the two Gerudo Chieftains are able to take down Thunderblight Ganon, keeping Vah Naboris under Urbosa's command. Riju then clears the way to reach Vah Medoh before using Vah Naboris to provide a way for Link to reach Vah Medoh to assist Revali and Teba against Windblight Ganon. Though Windblight Ganon escapes for the moment, Revali and Teba are safe, as is Vah Medoh.

Urbosa thanks Zelda for coming to her aid, then commends Riju for her help as well, though the younger Chieftain assures the older one that it was a group effort and not just her own, Urbosa is still grateful before asking Zelda about what happened at Hyrule Castle.

Riju continues to aid Urbosa and the others during the defenses of Akkala Citadel and Fort Hateno. At one point, seeing the vast army of Ganon's monsters and corrupted Guardians, Riju begins to doubt they can handle them all, but a pep talk from Urbosa convinces her they can, before leaping down to take Vah Naboris into action. After they clear the first wave, many of the slain monsters revive as skeletal versions of themselves, with a second wave coming behind them or from the flank. Despite Urbosa's annoyance at the enemy's stubbornness, Riju offers her some sagely advice, impressing Urbosa at how she sees the younger Gerudo vai after her own heart, before they see reinforcements arrive in the form of the other Divine Beasts, giving Urbosa and Riju a good laugh at what took them so long to show up.

After Purah summons them to the front lines with the other Divine Beasts and Champions to join the united allied coalition of Hyrule's races to take back Hyrule Castle from Calamity Ganon, Riju is amazed at seeing so many troops, including their own Gerudo warrior women. Once Zelda launches the siege, Riju aids in clearing the way to the castle, only to find their way blocked by Astor and Harbinger Ganon. After defeating both them and revived Blight Ganons, Astor loses it and orders Calamity Ganon to absorb the heroes, but is instead absorbed himself, being used by Calamity Ganon to create a perfected body for itself. Soon enough, Link is forced to fight Terrako when Calamity Ganon corrupts it with its Malice, leaving Terrako critically damaged, but free of the Malice. Terrako's fate infuriates Zelda, who swears that Calamity Ganon will be defeated once and for all.

Chasing Calamity Ganon to the castle citadel, the heroes find they can't damage Calamity Ganon due to his invulnerable defenses. At least until Terrako, with its last bits of energy and strength, throws itself at Calamity Ganon and self-destructs, breaking Ganon's defenses and leaving him vulnerable. Once Calamity Ganon is weakened by the others, Link delivers the finisher with the Master Sword, cleaving Ganon in half, before Zelda then uses her awoken sealing power to seal Calamity Ganon away for good, freeing Hyrule from his tyranny.

Sometime later on the castle balcony, the screw that Zelda had recovered that was all that was left of Terrako begins to react, and as it does, Riju, Teba, Yunobo, and Sidon begin glowing. With Hyrule safe and Ganon gone, their duty was complete, and they were being sent back to their own timeline in Breath of the Wild. Riju exchanges parting words with Urbosa, promising to remember their time together and the advice she learned about being a good Gerudo Chieftain from Urbosa, before together with Patricia and the other future Champions, Riju returns to her own timeline.

In the Guardian of Remembrance DLC, Urbosa took Riju to assist the Sheikah and the Science Academy by protecting them from the Yiga Clan soldiers led by Master Kohga as well as the monsters. Once they were driven out and the Hylian Soldiers regrouping with the Gerudo vai Soldiers, Urbosa commends how experienced Riju is with the Thunder Helm, prompting the former to explain her duties before she is interrupted by Master Kohga swiping the Thunder Helm from her and attaches it to his top knot and taunts Urbosa that her power won't work on him until she proves him wrong by shocking him with her signature power, forcing him to drop it and allowed Riju to retrieve it. A confused Kohga asks her how she still managed to do it, with Urbosa shooting back that it would take him a hundred years to fully master the Thunder Helm's power with Riju staring angrily at him. Pitching a fit, Master Kohga vows that he will eventually have it even if it took him that long before retreating in a puff of Yiga smoke, which allowed Urbosa and Riju to take a break.

During the secret DLC ending, Riju is seen sand seal surfing with Urbosa as they look at each other as they have fun together. She is later seen again talking among the other Champions as Terrako amuses them.

Character Information

Riju is a young Gerudo chief who cared for her people in her time and does what she can to be a decent leader to them. Because of her late mother's demise, she has to take the throne too early and is aware of her people's doubts about her. Riju seems to suffer a bit from an inferiority complex as she often questions her own competence and strength. Eventually she slowly starts to become more confident, and it was because of that, she was able to save Urbosa from Thunderblight Ganon's deadly blow. She noticeably exhibits moments of doubt and fear, until Urbosa, being a mother figure to her as she did Zelda, reassures her. Riju herself eventually reminds Urbosa when the latter becomes flustered herself. She became much more self-assured when Urbosa warmly tells her that she will lead her people well.
