Xun Chen (onyomi: Jun Chin) is an advisor of Yuan Shao. He, alongside Guo Tu and Xin Ping convinced Han Fu to surrender Yi Province to Yuan Shao. Xun Chen is the younger brother of Xun Yu.
Roles in Games
Xun Chen generally appears as one of Yuan Tan's or Yuan Xi's support units in the earlier Dynasty Warriors entries. In Dynasty Warriors 5 he is one of the many officers who rush fort Yanjin. In Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Xun Chen attempts to hold back the northern Wu fire attack at the hypothetical Battle of Chibi, which sees Yuan Shao taking Cao Cao's place against Wu.
In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games, Xun Chen is typically portrayed as an average governor, possessing low war and leadership stats but moderately high intelligence and political ability in the mid to high 70s range. Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV expands on his role as a domestic-political officer as his traits expedite his recruitment of free officers or search process of cities (Recruiter) and enhance his ability in handling foreign matters such as securing alliances (Debater). Continuing the trend of his lesser ability in leading troops, Xun Chen only has access to the Ring formation which is suited for defense rather than offense.
Xun Chen is usually associated with Han Fu's forces at the beginning of the conflict and is a member of his faction within the fictional "Gathering of Heroes" scenario, but appears as an officer in Yuan Shao and afterwards, Yuan Shang's faction in later scenarios. In the fourteenth title, "The Three Visits" scenario features Xun Chen as a free officer within Xiangping during the period where Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi flee to Gongsun Kang's territories in reference to his own ambiguous fate while the what-if DLC scenario "Gongsun Zan: the Hero of Hebei" depicts Xun Chen as one of the few surviving strategists from Yuan Shao's army, but is now serving within Cao Cao's ranks in reference to his relation with Xun Yu.
Historical Information
Xun Chen's exact date of birth is unknown’ but he is commonly considered the fourth younger brother of Xun Yu. The historicity of his service under Han Fu is debated, as his first of only two major mentions in history is when he, Guo Tu, and Xin Ping convinced Han Fu to yield Yi Province to Yuan Shao. Xun Chen joined in this debate to secure himself a position in Yuan Shao's court. A position he held until the battle of Guandu, where he disappears from history.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Xun Chen's appearance in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is largely identical to his historical appearances. The main difference is the added flair and drama to the discussions that Xun Chen partook. This is most especially shown when he and Xu You arrive during Yuan Shao's debate to engage in the campaign for Guandu. They both strongly advocate for battle, claiming Yuan's numbers are irresistible.
