Dynasty Warriors DS: Fighter's Battle is a card-based battle game for the Nintendo DS based on Dynasty Warriors 5. This is the first game in the series not to be produced by Omega Force. While meant to attract a younger audience, this title had been panned by fans for lacking Free Mode and other challenges.
Gameplay
The game features 108 cards that can be used to summon different warriors on the battlefield. While the player is free to form their deck however they want, the number of cards they can use depends on their defense points and the number of bases available on the map. Cards come in a variety of different types.
- Blue - Provides various coin effects to be used in battle. Can be leveled up to 3 stars.
- Red - Provides enhancements for the player's attack, defense, or health. Can be leveled up to 3 stars.
- Yellow - Provides both stat enhancements and coin effects. Cannot be leveled up.
- Green/Pink - Rare cards that provide various enhancements.
Battles take place on a map divided into different connected areas. The overall goal is to take the opposing side's main camp and bases while fending off a rival character's assaults. When entering an adjacent point, a number of enemy troops must be before proceeding any further. Movements are unrestricted upon passing through areas controlled by the allied army. Unlike in the main games, suffering defeat at the hands of the enemy will only warp the player to a random endpoint on the map.
Depot bases and armories start off as neutral at the beginning of each stage, and can be claimed by either side. Claiming ownership of these stores increases the size of one's army and improves their fighting abilities. Once claimed, an allied warrior in the player's deck will be summoned to protect the store. However, it should be noted that bases can still be taken over by the other force if not guarded carefully.
Dueling is another important aspect of the game. Players cannot conquer a base unless they defeat the enemy officer in charge of the area. In contrast to regular troops, each officer has their own set of unique quirks and attacks. Some ride on mounts while others drop their weapons while stunned. Another form of dueling involves pitting two opposing playable characters against each other. This occurs when both happen to be in the same area simultaneously.
Also featured are terrains filled with unique layouts, traps, and obstacles. For example, poisonous puddles reduce the health of whoever steps on them, frozen grounds cause sliding, rocking ships disrupt normal movement, and so on. The completion of these stages enables players to enter other adjacent regions on the map. Furthermore, conquering most, if not all, of the areas will result in the player's complete victory.
Players can connect to the wireless network and compete against one another. Matches are limited between two to three different players at a time.
Characters
There are three playable characters in the game. As the player chooses a character, one of the two not selected will become their rival throughout the whole game.
The character designs are modeled after the main cast from Dynasty Warriors 5 recreated in a cartoon-like style. With the exception of Sun Shang Xiang, female characters are omitted entirely. Some of the male cast have been reduced into generic officers and they are marked with a circle right next to them.

Development
In an interview with the game's producer Yoshihiro Kishimoto, it was a challenge for the developers to include as many characters as possible, forcing them to rely on 2D assets to supplement the 3D graphics. They initially considered adding touchscreen features before deciding against it, believing that the basic controls would be sufficient enough.
