Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends is an expansion of Dynasty Warriors 5. Players can import their data in this game if they already have an original Dynasty Warriors 5 disc. Its marketing catchphrase in Japan is "Here is my way of life.", likely referencing the title's new Destiny Mode.
Bonuses for the Premium Pack include a copy of the base title and four original postcards featuring various officers together. The Treasure Box version comes with mini replicas of Guan Yu and Lu Bu's weapons crossed together, a starter pack for the trading card game, a story book detailing the Three Kingdoms era, and the aforementioned postcards.
Changes
Modes
The game brings back several gameplay features from Dynasty Warriors 4: Xtreme Legends: Legend Mode, Xtreme Mode, and Edit Mode. Some of these features would eventually be integrated in the HD release of the base title.
Like its predecessor, Legend Mode contains an assortment of battles not found in Musou Mode. However, rather than being given their own stages, select characters now share battles albeit under different situations to add more variety. Interim saving follows the same rules from the base game with the number of saves dependent on the difficulty level chosen. The Novice difficulty level is now available for players who wish to easily clear stages. Seven new items can be found throughout this mode.
Xtreme Mode has received some notable changes to make things more convenient for players. Some of the most prominent additions are the inclusion of various facilities aside from shops, the ability to keep more recruited officers in reserve, new consumable items exclusive to this mode, and co-op gameplay. Music tracks from prior installments have also been added for the mode's various stages.
Edit Mode now provides more extensive options for creating a custom character. Like in Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires, they can be assigned weapons wielded by the main cast. Various costumes are available for both genders and can be unlocked in Destiny Mode. If the player imports data from the base game, they can even use edit characters in Free Mode.
Destiny Mode is a brand new feature that allows created characters to serve under the officers of the Three Kingdoms. At the beginning of their career, they are given mostly menial tasks while being limited to using swords, spears, or pikes in battle. Fulfilling missions and performing well earns them their officer's trust, paving the way for promotions and other rewards. New skills are learned by using points gained from clearing optional objectives. Because the time frame for this mode is much shorter than a Musou Mode battle, players are encouraged to be more flexible with their goals.
Challenge Mode introduces two new trials while revamping existing ones.
- Gatekeeper (堅守; Tight Defense) - Within Si Shui Gate's main camp, the player must stall foes from storming the area by preventing messengers from escaping as they will call upon reinforcements in the form of enemy officers.
- Speed Strike (急襲; Sudden Raid) - A reprisal of the Demolition challenge from Dynasty Warriors 4, the goal is to defeat as many targets as possible within a time limit of three minutes. Targets include peons, enemy officers, objects, and siege weapons.
- Time Attack (神速; Godspeed) - Functions similarly like in the base game, though the challenge now takes place within He Fei Castle's north central palace grounds.
- Rampage (暴風; Storm) - Functions similarly like in the base game, but the area is now situated at a single fort during the night.
- Sudden Death (生還; Survival) - Functions similarly like in the base game, but now takes place within Bai Di Castle's Stone Sentinel Maze with all the exists fully sealed.
- Bridge Melee (流星; Meteor) - Functions similarly like in the base game and even uses the same map layout, though it now takes place at sunset.
Gameplay
Some changes have been made to further fine-tune the game. For instance, the duration time of flinching has significantly increased, giving slow-hitting characters more viability for players who prefer to take on challenging battles. Certain characters also received minor adjustments to their attacks for balancing purposes.
A number of offense-oriented stats have been improved greatly. AI-controlled officers now behave more aggressively especially if the player turns their back on them momentarily.
Options for map events are available with three different modes to choose from: Manual, Auto, and Off.
- Manual - Causes the full battle map to be shown upon receiving a report.
- Auto - Briefly switches to the full battle map once a report is received before reverting back to the zoom map.
- Off - Prevents the current map from being changed during reports.
Wielding heavy weapons now prevents players from flinching against the enemy's normal attacks. This provides them with more opportunities to launch combos uninterrupted, serving as a boon for officers who had been given heavy fourth weapons in the base game. On another note, the effects of the Shadow Orb now fully work on weaker enemies.
The Camp feature now comes with a Power-Up option that enables players to upgrade first to third-tier weapons with various stat-boosting books. This gives them the potential of matching or even surpassing the potency of fourth weapons. Books can be acquired in Legend Mode and Musou Mode stages under any difficulty level except Easy. Xtreme Mode also yields books if the player opts to end their progress by exiting, though the amount obtained depends on many stages they completed.
- Book of Health (体力の書) - Increases the life attribute of a weapon.
- Book of Musou (無双の書) - Increases the Musou attribute of a weapon.
- Book of Attack (攻撃の書) - Increases the attack attribute of a weapon.
- Book of Defense (防御の書) - Increases the defense attribute of a weapon.
- Book of Striking (武器攻撃の書; Book of Weapon Attack) - Increases the innate attack power of a weapon. Represented by the kanji symbols 武攻 (Martial Prowess) in the Japanese version.
- Book of Attributes (武器効果の書; Book of Weapon Effect) - Increases other attributes of a weapon. Represented by the kanji symbols 武効 (Martial Feat) in the Japanese version.
For the Japanese port, a password system is included for players who own the Shin Sangoku Musou app (obtained by subscribing to i-mode, Vodafone live!, or EZweb) in their cellphones. By spending Musou points on the app's site, they can acquire passwords containing bonus content. These include more power-up books, high-leveled common items, costume parts for edit characters, etc.
The character reset option has been brought back as well. Several bugs and error from the base game are now gone.
