Sui Gu

From Koei Tecmo Wiki

Sui Gu (onyomi: Ki Ko) is a Black Mountain bandit who later served Yuan Shao.

Role in Games

Sui Gu appears in Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends as an enemy officer at Changshan. He is one of the three officers who attack Yuan Shao's main camp from the east in the beginning of the stage.

Sui Gu also appears as an officer in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He is given fairly decent battle skills with War in the low 70's, but his domestic skills are poor overall with a Politics stat in the sigle digits. Most games depict him as a cavalry officer and as a member of the Yellow Turbans before going on to serve Zhang Yang after the dissolution of the Anti-Dong Zhuo coalition. Scenarios depicting Zhang Yan as leader of his own faction will usually feature Sui Gu as a member.

Sui Gu's treatment in Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV is similar to other bandit characters as his character traits allow him to receive gold and supplies from defeated enemy units (Plunderer), but negatively decrease the public order of areas he occupies (Bandit), and his unit is unable to ignore enemy units that his unit makes contact with (Reckless). Like many officers with a background in banditry, he is limited to using the Snake formation which is unsuited for combat outside of mountain and forest terrains. His administrative policy strengthens the creation of traps in mountainous terrain (Research Terrains Lv 3).

Historical Information

Probably born in Bing Province, Sui Gu became a Black Mountain bandit under the leadership of Zhang Yan. In 193, Yuan Shao started an expedition against them in the Taihang mountains west of Ji Province and killed most of their leaders at Lucheng. Zhang Yan met Yuan Shao's forces at Changshan and they fought for several days before both sides withdrew. Around that time, Sui Gu left the bandits. He went to the Governor of Henei, Zhang Yang, and became one of his vassals. In 198, Zhang Yang aligned himself with Lu Bu and prepared his forces to assist him in his fight against Cao Cao, but he was assassinated by his officer Yang Chou, who wished to lead his remnant forces to join Cao Cao. Sui Gu quickly killed Yang Chou and took control of the army. He then led them east to join Yuan Shao instead and was stationed at Shequan.

Cao Cao sent his general Shi Huan to camp at Quancheng and prepare an attack on Sui Gu. The Dianlue (典略) states that when Sui Gu was in the city, a sorcerer said to him, "General, your style is Rabbit ("Botu" means "White Rabbit") while the city’s name is Dog ("Quancheng" translates to "Dog City"). When a rabbit sees a dog, it is naturally afraid. You ought to move elsewhere as soon as possible." Sui Gu did not heed the advice and instead led his forces to attack Shi Huan at Quancheng. Sui Gu was either captured and executed or killed in battle and his forces absorbed into Cao Cao's army.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Sui Gu only appears in chapter 19 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He is mentioned to have joined Yuan Shao after killing Yang Chou, who had previously killed Zhang Yang. He led his forces to Daicheng, where he was attacked and killed by Shi Huan.
