Historical Information
Liu Yong was the second son of Liu Bei and one of his concubines. In 221, Liu Bei declared himself Emperor and Shu minister Xu Jing made Liu Yong the Prince of Lu. Later, in 230, Liu Yong was enfeoffed Prince of Ganling. Liu Yong developed a great dislike for the eunuch Huang Hao, who served Liu Shan as a trusted advisor. One time, Huang Hao spoke ill of Liu Yong in front of Liu Shan, causing the latter to distance himself from his half-brother. Liu Yong was not allowed to see Liu Shan in court for more than 10 years and thus, he held a big grudge against Huang Hao. In 263, Shu was invaded by Wei and Liu Shan surrendered. Liu Yong moved to the Wei capital at Luoyang and was appointed Chief Commandant of Chariots by Cao Huan, although this was only a nominal title without real power. One year later, he was made Marquis of Xiang. He continued to serve as an official during the Jin Dynasty.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the novel, Liu Yong is only mentioned in Chapter 80. When Liu Bei declares himself Emperor of Shu, Liu Yong is appointed Prince of Lu while his siblings Liu Shan and Liu Li are made Heir Apparent and Prince of Liang respectively.
