Gao Ding (onyomi: Kō Tei) is the leader of a foreign tribe in Yuexi Commandery. He was among the many tribal kings who rebelled against Shu before being submitting to them.
Role in Games
Gao Ding appears as a generic officer under Shu in the later battles of the Dynasty Warriors series, often living up to Wuzhang Plains. In Dynasty Warriors 5, he and his allies serve as adversaries for Meng Huo in the Struggle for Nan Zhong stage. However, as recent games strive to be more historically accurate, his presence in Shu has become increasingly minimal. Oddly, in some portrayals of the character, Gao Ding appears as a Nanman-looking general. Instances of this are shown in Dynasty Warriors 3, Dynasty Warriors 4 and again in Dynasty Warriors 8
In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, Gao Ding is a below average officer whose only redeeming traits are leadership and war.
Voice Actors
- Richard Epcar - Dynasty Warriors 5 (English-uncredited)
Historical Information
As king of the Man tribe, Gao Ding held some level of prominence within Yi Province. In 218, he staged an insurrection against the Shu general Jiao Huang and would have conquered Jianwei Commandery if not for the intervention of its administrator Li Yan.
When Liu Bei died in 223, he conspired with Yong Kai and Zhu Bao to overthrow Shu, but later betrayed them after surrendering to Zhuge Liang. As a result, he was made an official magistrate of Yi Province. In 225, he died participating in one of Zhuge Liang's campaigns.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the novel, Gao Ding appears in chapter 87 where he and E Huan lead the charge against Shu. Zhuge Liang's hospitality towards E Huan and the captured soldiers leads Gao Ding to believe his sincerity and doubt Yong Kai. But when Zhuge Liang attempts to have him executed as a conspirator of Zhu Bao, Gao Ding proves his loyalty by slaying the rebels and presenting their heads.
