Feng Xi

From Koei Tecmo Wiki

Feng Xi (onyomi: Fū Shū) is an officer of Shu who joined battle at Yiling. He and Zhang Nan fought together during the campaign, pushing the frontlines until he met the Wu counteroffensive and dies at Pan Zhang's hands.

Role in Games

Feng Xi appears in Dynasty Warriors 7 at the battle of Yiling. On the Wu side, Xi holds the secondary line, rushing the Wu camp once the fire attack is initiated. On the Shu side, Feng Xi fights on the front lines and needs rescuing by Zhuge Liang and Yueying (and her device for ending the rampaging fire). Dynasty Warriors 8 has him resume is place at Yiling. This time in the Wu story, he appears in front of the main camp trying to attack the players at the beginning of the gameplay. In the Shu version, he once more fights on the front lines, but will be overwhelmed and slain if Guan Xing and Zhang Bao's path is not taken.

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, he first appears in the fourth game. His stats encourage having him focus on war and leadership as his intelligent and politics are typically quite low.

Quotes

Historical Information

The drawing of Feng Xi, draw by unknown artist.

Feng Xi originated from Nanyang in Jingzhou. He joined Liu Bei at an unknown date, presumably before the Yizhou campaign. When Liu Bei declared himself emperor, Xi was appointed the position of Grand Viceroy.

When Liu Bei began preparations to punish Sun Wu for their betrayal and seizure of Jing province, Feng Xi was one of the many officers commissioned to serve in the campaign. During the beginning of Yiling, Feng Xi and Wu Ban fought together toward the frontlines. They defeated the Wu forces under Li Yi and Liu A at Wu Gorge. This successful beginning, however, would soon turn sour once Lu Xun began his counterattack. Feng Xi was caught out and exposed, leading to his defeat and death at the hands of subordinates under Pan Zhang. Yang Xi, another Shu officer later in the kingdom's history, commented on Feng Xi's defeat, believing his pride led him to act rashly while his foes remained not yet fully defeated.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Feng Xi was loyal without peer;
Zhang Nan was righteous, few have equaled him.
In battle on the flaming shore they died,
And the histories record their deeds.
― A poem praising Feng Xi and Zhang Nan's sacrifice

Feng Xi first appears in the novel in chapter 81, at the beginning of preparations for the Yiling campaign. He is appointed marching general alongside Zhang Nan. In the following chapter, Feng Xi, Zhang Nan, and Hu Ban achieve several victories against their Wu foes. The trio even manage to pull off a false surrender scheme against Zhu Ran. They also praise the skills of Zhang Bao and Guan Xing as worthy heirs to their departed fathers.

In chapter 83, Feng Xi accepts the surrenders of Fu Shiren and Mi Fang, who thought the tides were turning to support Shu now instead of Wu. He also proposes to Liu Bei that the men be allowed to move their camps to shaded locations due to the summer heat being hard to bear for his men. This decision proved disastrous, however, as Lu Xun launched a fire attack against Shu and the trees they had sought shelter from the sun ended up adding fuel for the flames to spread. When Liu Bei flees to his camp, Feng Xi attempts to draw off Xu Sheng and his forces, but gets ignored. Recognizing he cannot fight them on his own with a scattered force, Xi seeks the reinforcement of Zhang Nan and Hu Ban. The three officers quickly gather what forces they can and rush to confront the Wu forces perusing Liu Bei. In the ensuing melee, Feng Xi is slain.
