Cheng Gongying (onyomi: Sei Kōei) is an advisor of Han Sui who later served Wei. He does not appear in Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Role in Games
Cheng Gongying has a minor role in Dynasty Warriors, only appearing in more recent games. In Dynasty Warriors 7, Cheng Gongying leads reinforcements to attack Cao Cao's northern camp at Tong Gate. The subsequent installment has him serve as part of Bian Zhang's rearguard at Liang Province and appear at Tong Gate with reinforcements during mid-battle to advance on Cao Cao's main camp. He also appears at Chang'an in the expansion.
In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Cheng Gongying is a fairly recent addition to the roster and will serve under Ma Teng or Han Sui in cases where the latter breaks off from Ma Teng or Ma Chao before ultimately serving Cao Cao once Liang Province is subjugated. Distinct from most officers originating from Xiliang, Cheng Gongying possesses very well-rounded stats as well as higher marks in Intelligence, Politics and Charisma that land in the 70's. Thus, he can perform well in an adviser role and use ploys more efficiently against other officers. In addition to being skilled with cavalry units, Cheng Gongying possesses a higher affinity in using siege weaponary compared to other Xiliang officers.
Historical Information
Cheng Gongying was born in Jincheng commandery of Liang Province. He was acquainted to Han Sui and joined him during the Liang Province Rebellion against the Han in the late 180's, serving as his adviser. He accompanied him into the war against Cao Cao, where they were defeated at Tong Gate. Han Sui withdrew to the west and resisted Cao Cao's invasion in Hanyang. Eventually, Han Sui's officer Yan Xing revolted and attacked Han Sui. Han Sui wished to seek help from Liu Bei in Yi, but Cheng Gongying advised against it and instead told Han Sui to flee to the Qiang. Han Sui agreed and with the help of the tribes, he was able to repel Yan Xing. However, Han Sui died shortly later, upon which Cheng Gongying surrendered to Cao Cao.
Cheng Gongying was greatly admired by Cao Cao. At one occasion, Cheng Gongying went on a hunting trip with Cao Cao and impressed him by shooting three deer with three arrows. He was also a very loyal person. When Cao Cao asked him if he would be as loyal to him as he had been to Han Sui, Cheng Gongying told him that if Han Sui were still alive, he would have remained by his side. Cao Cao respected him even more for that statement. Cheng Gongying eventually served under Zhang Ji as an Army Advisor. He contributed to the subjugation of Zhang Jin in 220 and several Hu tribes in 221 before he died of natural causes shortly later.
