Shi Huangdi

Template:Infobox Other NPC Shi Huangdi (始皇帝, lit. "First Emperor". onyomi: Shikōtei) is generally credited to have founded the first unified Empire of China around 221 BCE, beginning construction of the Great Wall along with many other great projects at the expense of countless lives. As emperor, he was renowned for his ruthlessness and tyrannical efforts to shape the country according to his vision and extravagant lifestyle. He lived to be only 50 years old, ironically due to consumption of mercury in an effort to prolong his life.

His height for his normal human form in the Dynasty Warriors series is 178 cm (5'10"). He mainly appears as an elderly gentleman, but he can transform into a gigantic beast or into a younger version of himself for this franchise.

Role in Games

Shi Huangdi, a tyrannical ruler with mystical powers, has been revived after the devastation caused by Lu Bu's revolt and death from the first title and serves as the game's main antagonist. With the power to resurrect old heroes and gods at his command, he disrupts the newfound peace and desires to create an "undying, eternal empire" for himself. In order to fulfill his ambitions, he also resurrects Xiang Yu and gains Huang Quan as an ally. The heroes of the Three Kingdoms band together to stop him.

Even when surrounded by his enemies, he turns himself into a monstrous being by merging with the fallen forms of the Black Dragon and the Mysterious Turtle. The ensuing battle eventually took its toll on Shi Huangdi's new vessel, causing all the souls he absorbed to be released. Thus, his dream to revive his empire came to a bitter end.

Gameplay

Shin Sangoku Musou Multi Raid 2

As the main antagonist of Shin Sangoku Musou Multi Raid 2, Shi Huangdi is a powerful boss whose arsenal of moves are mostly based on game's weapon moveset system. As such, he has several attacks used for a variety of purposes like most of the playable cast.

Moveset

;Ground Attacks

String: Launches a series of dark fireballs forward with the fourth and fifth volley firing two and the last shot sending out three simultaneously. Can hit downed targets.

String: Unleashes a surge of flames forward, then shoots three dark energy waves traveling at a fan arc, then spins around with both arms outstretched as they spew two streams of fire momentarily.

Charge Attack: After briefly charging up power, Shi Huangdi conjures several small pillars of darkness that materialize on random spots. Can also be done in mid-air.

Dash Attack: Dashes against nearby targets while surrounded by six dark fireballs.

Special Dash Attack: Releases a sudden burst of dark energy to break the player's guard. Can also be done in mid-air.

Special Attack 1: Shi Huangdi generates multiple volleys of dark fireballs radiating from him in different directions. This attack lasts for a while even after moving freely and performing another technique.

Air Attacks

Air String: Launches a series of dark sonic blasts while up in the air.

Air String: Causes several pillars of darkness to rise up on the ground and spread out in different directions.

Jump Charge: Lands down and causes pillars of darkness to materialize.

Younger Version Attacks

String: Swings pike in varying angles five times before slamming it down to produce a dark shockwave moving forward on the ground. Can hit downed targets.

Air String: Swings sword back and forth to launch several angled energy waves in a row.

Dash Attack: Performs a slanted spin slash with a club while dashing, then unleashes a dark radial shockwave for good measure.

Special Attack 2: Shi Huangdi conjures a dome of darkness while sending out multiple flying swords infused with negative energy to converge together as they home in on the player.

Auxiliary Attacks

Temporary Invisibility: Shi Huangdi can temporarily become invisible after being struck by an attack, enabling him to avoid damage for a short time or pop up in unexpected spots.

Teleportation: Teleports to another part of the area, making it difficult to target him. Shi Huangdi will only perform this move after losing a portion of health during the player's story battles against him.

Counter Debuff: Hitting Shi Huangdi without activating Weapon Overdrive will leave players frozen in ice for a brief moment. His younger version, on the other hand, inflicts a status ailment that seals off the player's ability to activate Weapon Overdrive as well as fury form transformation and support skills.

Fighting Style

Shi Huangdi comes with a slew of attacks that make him incredibly dangerous even for veteran players. For one, his normal attack chain combined with his special attack can seriously cripple the player's team if they are not spread out enough to evade the onslaught. His yin elemental attacks may prove to be a hindrance for those who overly rely on their fury forms to win.

It is also hard to target Shi Huangdi effectively due to his tendency to teleport in and out of danger. His attack chain is the only move in his arsenal that inflicts fire damage, making it particularly deadly as the engulf status can eat away the player's health if they are not too careful.

Upon confronting Shi Huangdi in his prime, he trades some of his long-range attacks in favor of physical attacks adapted from various weapon movesets. His new special attack is easy to avoid so long as players are fast enough. He will also utilize his attack string more often and even chain it together with his new normal attack combos afterwards.

:Attack 1: Stomps the ground hard with all four limbs. Shi Huangdi will also use this attack to counter the player's assaults.

Attack 2: Swings tail around, leaving behind several dark shockwaves on the ground.

Attack 3: Shi Huangdi emits a surge of dark energy around him while conjuring stationary spheres of darkness that serve as obstacles.

Attack 4: Roars loudly while causing golden spheres to rain down on one large spot. Can inflict metal damage as well as stun.

Attack 5: Leaps up and slowly lands on the ground hard. Inflicts metal damage.

Attack 6: Channels energy from wings to rain down golden laser beams fired diagonally while flying up in the air. Inflicts metal damage. Shi Huangdi will only use this move once his wings glow after losing enough health bars.

Attack 7: Swings claws back and forth, releasing massive criss-cross shaped energy waves traveling at a steady pace. Inflicts metal damage. Shi Huangdi will only use this move once his wings glow after losing enough health bars.

Teleportation: Teleports to another part of the area, an ability Shi Huangdi retains in his monster form.

Counter Debuff: Hitting Shi Huangdi's monster form without activating Weapon Overdrive will inflict players with the confuse status which temporarily lowers their movement speed, leaving them less likely to evade attacks in time.

Fighting Style

The usual rules to slaying giant monsters in this game apply to Shi Huangdi's monstrous form, meaning players will have to be smart about evading certain attacks while whittling down his health the moment he shows some vulnerability. Due to his status as the final boss, he has the largest increment of health and defense among monster-type units. Players can aim for his horn or tail, though hittings his limbs works fine so long as he is not doing anything.

The phantom swordsmen assisting him are not that strong, but they can get in the way of setting up attacks and even respawn continuously after their defeat. Thus, players would need to have one or two allies distract them while the rest take on Shi Huangdi. In solo challenges, weapons that offer long-range capabilities are invaluable, though care is still advised as Shi Huangdi's golden sphere shots can hit players where they least expect it.

In the downloadable mission "A Feast Offering for Despair", players are pitted against a variation of Shi Huangdi who is accompanied by his retinue of officers and guards. Not only do his attacks inflict more damage, he can also inflict the despair status, a rare condition that depletes the awakening gauge and prevents it from recovering for a set time. Fortunately, the mission's DLC pack comes with a chi skill that provides immunity to its effects, though players will have to decide whether or not the skill is worth giving up a slot for.
