Historical Information

Gamō Satoie originated from Owari province. His father was probably Gamō Satonari, although they were a part of the Saka clan at the time. Satonari may not have been Satorie's father, but possibly his elder brother, as Satoie's family records are not very clear. Satoie himself was still known as Saka Genbei at the time. He served under Shibata Katsuie at first, but eventually began to serve the Gamō clan. The first real chance Satoie gained to distinguish himself, however, was under the rule of the Toyotomi. During the Kyūshū campaign, Satoie's excellence in battle impressed Gamō Ujisato enough to give Satoie his last name (a reward that Ujisato gave his most valuable retainers).

Satoie faithfully followed Ujisato to Aizu Province, where he was granted an estate of 40,000 koku. However, Satoie's prospects turned sour with after the Kasai-Ōsaki Uprising and Ujisato's death, as his son Gamō Hideyuki couldn't keep all of his retainers under his control and the ensuing fallout left Gamō Satoie a ronin in desperate need of employment. Ishida Mitsunari offered Satoie employment. As a result, Satoie fought at the battle of Sekigahara, managing to survive and escape the fallout, taking up service under Tōdō Takatora. When Gamō Hideyuki died, Gamō Satoie rejoined the Gamō.
