Samurai Warriors 5/Citadel Mode

Citadel Mode (堅城演武) in Samurai Warriors 5 is a sister mode that runs in tandem with Story Mode. The mode consists of defending one to three bases from waves of enemies for five minutes. These bases have gate guards who defend these points for a time, but should they be defeated, enemy soldiers and officers can directly enter the player's camp and damage the base health. Should that health deplete entirely, the battle is lost. The goal of each battle is to survive 5 minutes or defeat the stage boss, all the while scoring as many points as possible from defeating peons and officers, completing missions, and keeping the bases intact.

To achieve as high a score as possible before the time is up or the boss is defeated. Most stages possess three waves of enemies to defeat, with the final few stages possessing four. The rank awarded is dependent on the score achieved, ranging from D to S. Points are awarded for defeating soldiers and officers, with their point value increasing the higher the combo held during the battle. During the time limit, three randomly generated objectives are issued, which greatly enhances both the player's score and increases the time limit by thirty seconds. Players can summon up to three different units of defensive troops to help hold back the waves of enemy forces.

Battles yield bonus experience, weapon experience, skill points, gold, weapons, horses, and uniquely, the resources needed to upgrade the buildings in My Castle. Obtaining higher ranks in each battle acquires extra building resources and each rank possesses an extra reward for achieving that rank. For example: achieving rank B in the first mission will earn the tier's weapon experience scroll, skill points tome, and some extra gold from the lower rank rewards.

Another reward earned from playing the battles is some officers can gain friendship level points. The officers who can do this are marked on the character selection page with a handshake icon and bar over their portrait. Completing a battle better earns more friendship points. S earns forty points, while each grade lower earns ten less points then the previous rank. It takes a minimum of three battles to build the 100 points needed to maximize friendship and unlock a character event between the two officers.

The key to getting the highest ranks in these battles is to keep the combo count growing. As the combo count reaches the thousands, each peon defeated becomes far more valuable in points, and officers defeated with exceptionally high combo counts can be worth more than completing a mission.

Troops

Alongside the two playable officers selected for each battle, players are given access to squads of different unit types to summon onto the battlefield. These troops replace items in Citadel Mode, and only three different squads may be brought at a time. These squads level up with use and grow both stronger and greater in number as they strengthen. Their maximum level is 5.

When summoned, a group of that type of soldiers will appear right in front of the officer who summoned them. Each unit begins with their signature attack (most have a second special attack players can toggle once they've leveled up enough) and will remain in the general vicinity, fighting any enemies that wander into their range. Every soldier or officer they defeat is still added to the player's score, but they do not increase the player's combo count, which in turn means each kill does not increase the value of the next defeated foe.

Each troop can only be on the battlefield in one place at a time. For example: if a player summons the footsoldier squad at one of the defensive gates, but later summons the footsoldier squad elsewhere on the map, the original group leaves and respawns at this new location. These troop squads can help delay enemy soldiers and officers from reaching the player's bases, allowing characters to move from purely defensive positioning.

Battles

Citadel Mode contains 37 battles, each using part of, or an entire map, from Musou Mode.  While individual access to each level is generally unlocked by completing the one or two before it, full groups of levels are not unlocked until chapters within Musou Mode are completed. The higher the difficulty of a battle, the more resources it awards for completion. Score controls what rank is awarded, and these points come from enemies defeated, missions completed, and a combo+time end battle bonus. If possible, it is generally better to defeat the boss(es) of a stage before the timer ends, as the end of stage bonus can push the score over the required threshold if done fast enough.

Objectives

During any battle of the Citadel Mode, three objectives will be issued alongside the three waves of enemies. The first set tends to focus on defeating specialized troops, the second tends to focus on stopping an attack that rushes one of the bases, the third challenges players to defeat a certain number of peons within a certain time and other restrictions. Objectives typically begin a distance away from where the player is defending their base(es), requiring players to risk harm to their base for the sake of these extra points.

Completing objectives award both a large number of points and adds thirty seconds to the timer. The extra time is especially helpful for achieving high scores, as any remaining extra time is converted into bonus points during the point tally at the end of the stage.

First Objectives:

  • A Monk's Prayer - Defeat the warriors monks, and prevent them from rallying the enemy army! (Within 1 minute)
