Katana Engine is a propriety game engine developed by Koei Tecmo's technical division Future Tech Base. It's used not only for game development, but also for efficiently producing CG assets ranging from textures to cinematic cutscenes.[1] The name of the engine had been trademarked in early 2021.

One of the key reasons for Koei Tecmo to create their own engine is self-reliance. The company felt that depending on external software like Unreal Engine and Unity to produce games would only limit the ways they can develop new titles. There was also the matter of increasing production efficiency without sacrificing quality in order to compete in the growing market. As such, the Katana Engine was made to not only streamline asset production, but also make things easier for workers via user-friendly options. It also allowed games to be made for multiple platforms including consoles and smartphones.[2]
