Naoyori Shinjō was a general during the Sengoku period. Throughout his life, he was as vassal of four clans: Azai, Oda, Toyotomi and Tokugawa.
Role in Games
In Samurai Warriors, Naoyori follows Oichi at Anegawa stage. In Samurai Warriors 3, he is stationed in the between of the Asakura army and Azai main army, along with Higuchi Naofusa and Atsuji Sadayuki. After the Oda vs. Azai battles, he is usually never seen again.
In Nobunaga no Yabou Online, he serves as an officer of Azai and uses sword as his weapon.
Historical Information
Naoyori was born in Ōmi Province. After his father's death in 1549, he and his younger brother, Shinjō Naotada went to serve Azai Nagamasa.
He fought in a battle at Anegawa and, in 1571, he and Isono Kazumasa surrendered to Niwa Nagahide. After the surrender, Oda Nobunaga ordered him to be vassal of Hashiba Hideyoshi.
During the battle at Shizugatake, he defended Sakamoto Castle and received Yamazaki Castle as an award for his actions, as well as stipend of 30,000 Koku. In 1591, he was relocated to Ōtsu Castle and got a stipend of 12,000 Koku and received the order to help his son, Shinjō Naosada to develop the land for a total of 24,000 Koku.
In 1594, when the messenger of Ming Dynasty, Shen Wei Jing (沈惟敬) met Hideyoshi, he reportedly drunk with Hasegawa Moritomo (長谷川守知), Amago Saburōsaemon (尼子三郎左衛門) and Mikami Yosaburō (三上与三郎).
After Hideyoshi's death, he had received 10 bones of Hideyoshi to keep for worshipping. In 1600, he joined Western Army and led an army to attack Tsutsui Sadatsugu at Ueno Castle in Iga Province. After the Tokugawa's victory at Sekigahara, he was arrested but he later released under the custody of Gamō Hideyuki. He was pardoned by Ieyasu and he served Tokugawa until his death at the age of 74.
