Myōkyū

Lady Myōkyū is a princess from the Kikkawa Clan and Motonari Mōri's wife. She is the mother of Takamoto Mōri, Motoharu Kikkawa, and Takakage Kobayakawa.

Role in Games

In Samurai Warriors 4: Empires, she serves Mōri alongside her son.

In Chikai no Sanshi, she is the woman that Motonari chose to marry. Her father was happy to arrange the marriage. After marrying Motonari, she gave birth to the three sons - Takamoto, Motoharu, Takakage and one daughter - Kikuhime. Soon afterwards she fell ill and died, causing a great grief for Motonari and her children. All of her maids and vassals of her husband expressed regret upon hearing the news of her death. During the second Battle of Gassantoda, an aged Motonari told of his past to his grandson, noting that he lost a lot of people, dear to his heart and he misses them dearly. He names Myōkyū as one of such people.

Historical Information

She was a daughter of Kikkawa Kunitsune. Kikkawa Mototsune and Kikkawa Tsuneyo were her elder brothers. Later she married Motonari and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Later she fell ill and died at the age around 47. Her Buddhist name was Myōkyūshiten Seishitsu Kyūkōtashi (妙玖寺殿成室玖公大姉).

Etymology

  • Myōkyū means "strange, odd, peculiar, unusual, bizarre, mysterious, inexplicable, abnormal, irregular" (妙) (myō) and "beautiful black jewel, nine" (玖) (kyū).
