Fighting Style

Keys: Square Normal Attack • Triangle Charge Attack Circle Musou X Jump/Mount
Main Attacks
Charge Attack 1: Triangle: Huang Zhong takes out his bow and shoots five arrows straight ahead while holding it horizontally. Can lock onto the nearest targets in both the base game and Xtreme Legends. While normal arrows are used for this attack, they will not be taken from the player's own arrow stock. The move's crowd clearing potential is further enhanced if Huang Zhong is equipped with either Huang's Bow (for extra bow attack) and/or fire arrows.
Charge Attack 2: Square Triangle: Does a crouch-turning uppercut scooping slash that sends foes airborne.
Charge Attack 3: Square Square Triangle: Shoots several arrows in a row while positioned in a crouching stance. The last shot dizzies foes hit. Similar to the first charge/C1 attack, this move does not expend the player's arrow supply and can even be replaced with flammable arrows provided they have enough space in their item inventory. Unlike the C1 arrows, arrows shot from this move do not inflict any knockdown hit effects on grounded hit. Tap Triangle repeatedly for additional hits.
Charge Attack 4: Square Square Square Triangle: Turns around and swings downwards. Disperses enemy crowds surrounding Huang Zhong, but loses its dispersing effect on an airborne hit.
Charge Attack 5: Square Square Square Square Triangle: Launches enemies high up into the air with a quick but powerful upward swing. Press Triangle to further extend the move with an aerial spin strike.

Musou Attacks
Musou Attack: Circle: Huang Zhong performs the dao moveset's Musou attack from the second game, though his version has him struggle in trying to stay upright at the end of the attack.
True Musou Attack: Low Health + Circle: Similar to the normal Musou animation, but adds a round slash, a stab, and a diagonal swing before the normal finisher can be executed.
Auxiliary Attacks
Dash Attack: Dashing + Square: Performs a sliding stab attack.
Jump Attack: X Square: Does a narrow circular slash while leaping up.
Jump Charge: X Triangle: Performs an aerial flip before driving sword down on the ground, producing a tremor that knocks foes off their feet.
Parry: L1 + Triangle: Instantly performs the fourth charge attack to counter incoming blows.
Announcement: R3: Delivers a taunting cry while generating wisps of light. Staggers nearby enemies while breaking through their guard instantly. Aura may change color in Free Mode to match the user's chosen side.
Horse Attacks

Charge Attack 3: Square Square Triangle: Shoots several vertical energy disks in a row.
Musou Attack: Circle: The animations are the same as in Dynasty Warriors 4, though it cannot be stopped until the player's Musou gauge is fully depleted. Similar to the Musou attacks employed by the Samurai Warriors cast, a shockwave burst is added at the end of the finisher.
Roll: R: Rolls on the ground to evade enemy attacks.

Fighting Style

Although Huang Zhong now uses the bow for certain attacks, his blade-based moveset remains mostly unchanged. His first charge/C1 is great for eliminating troops units and stalling officers. It also helps that Huang Zhong has the strongest bow attack stat alongside Xiahou Yuan. The third charge can be used to inflict heavy damage if performed with a powerful weapon. It should be noted that the aforementioned moves are affected by the Fire Arrows item, meaning Huang Zhong can further weaken foes from a safe distance, or inflict dispersing knockback on foes with lower bow defense + increased bow attack stats on Huang Zhong.

Said C1 can even snipe vertical targets within horizontal distance, such as on high towers or below certain cliffs.

When controlled by the AI in Empires, Huang Zhong's charge attacks will be imbued with the lightning element by default.

Keys: Square Normal Attack • Triangle Charge Attack Circle Musou X Jump/Mount

Base Game

Main Attacks
Charge Attack 1: Triangle: Huang Zhong takes out his bow and shoots five arrows straight ahead while holding it horizontally. While normal arrows are used for this attack, they will not be taken from the player's own arrow stock. The move's crowd clearing potential is further enhanced if Huang Zhong is equipped with fire or ice arrows. Unlike in the past game, Huang Zhong can fire up to six volleys in a row via repeated button input and the arrows themselves can now pierce through multiple targets (but no longer goes an infinite-forward distance). Cannot activate elemental effects provided by orbs.
Charge Attack 2: Square Triangle: Does a spiraling uppercut slash that sends foes airborne. Cannot activate elemental effects provided by orbs.
Charge Attack 3: Square Square Triangle: Shoots several arrows in a row while positioned in a crouching stance. The last volley shot is shrouded in yellow-colored energy and dizzies foes that they hit, but cannot pierce through units. Similar to the first charge attack, this move does not expend the player's arrow supply and can even be replaced with flammable or ice arrows (but no longer goes an infinite-forward distance like in the last installment).
Charge Attack 4: Square Square Square Triangle: Turns around and swings downwards. Disperses enemy crowds surrounding Huang Zhong, but loses its dispersing effect on an airborne hit.
Charge Attack 5: Square Square Square Square Triangle: Launches foes up high into the air with a surge of light produced via ground slam.
Charge Attack 6: Square Square Square Square Square Triangle: Spins around twice while slashing at foes. While this attack no longer releases energy disks like it once did, players can still utilize it for inflicting elemental damage on enemy crowds.
Normal Attack 1: Square Square Square Square: Lands a round swing to the left, a rightward horizontal slash, a short stab, and a frontal swipe headed to the rear.
Normal Attack 2: Square Square Square Square Square: Similar to the first normal attack string, but adds a wide round swipe headed towards the left.
Normal Attack 3: Square Square Square Square Square Square: Similar to the second normal attack string, but includes a frontal swipe angled slightly downward.
Evolution Attack: Square Square Square Square Square Square Square Square Square Square: Extends the normal attack string by cycling back to the third hit sequence.

Musou Attack: Circle: Huang Zhong performs the dao moveset's Musou attack from the second game, though his version has him struggle in trying to stay upright at the end of the attack.

Warriors Orochi

Modified Attacks
Charge Attack 1: Triangle: Functions similarly to its base game incarnation, but the arrows now fly in a fan arc instead. The first volley also has ice and slay properties. The sequel only allows it to inflict elemental damage when used as an enhanced charge attack.
Charge Attack 3: Square Square Triangle: Functions similarly to its base game incarnation, but the arrows now fly in a fan arc while traveling faster. The sequel allows it to inflict elemental damage when used as an enhanced charge attack.
Jump Charge: X Triangle: Functions similarly to its base game incarnation, though the arrows are fired at a fan arc and imbued with stun properties.
Enhanced Strike/EX Charge Attack: Tapping R1 instead of Triangle for most grounded charge attacks will enhance their damage output and attack speed while also lacing them fully with elemental activation. Multi-input charge attacks will automatically go through their full sequence when enhanced. Consumes a portion of Musou when used.
Airborne Critical Hit: All Charge Attacks, including Enhanced Strikes or Extra Counters can inflict critical hit carried over from Samurai Warriors 2 on airborne targets. Critical hits are normally a x1.4 damage increase.
New Attacks
Special Attack/Type Action: Square Square Square R1 (C4-EX-SP): Huang Zhong lifts himself to the air while spinning upside-down and fires a volley of arrows below him. The arrows themselves are shot at a funnel-shaped pattern and can break through the enemy's guard. However, they are unable to pierce through multiple foes. Consumes 20 Musou points. The sequel changes up this move by making its funnel-range more narrow in exchange for being able to utilize weapon attributes.
Counter Attack/Extra Counter: Counter + R1: Fires energy-infused arrows in a fan formation to stun foes momentarily while flipping back for safety. Note that this attack cannot pierce through several enemies, making it less reliable against larger crowds.
Team Abilities
Ability 1 - Recover: Gradually regains the team's life.
Ability 2 - Focus: Increases the team's Musou.
Ability 3 - Speed: Increases attack of Speed-type characters.

Warriors Orochi 2

Team Attacks
Assist Attack: Counter + L1 + Square or Triangle: Huang Zhong performs his special attack to assist a teammate. Consumes a portion of Musou.
Triple Attack 1: Low Health + L2 + R2 + Circle: Uses bow to shoot large gusts of air.
Triple Attack 2: Low Health + L2 + R2 + Circle: Slams the ground to produce a large column of wind.
Triple Attack 3: Low Health + L2 + R2 + Circle: Releases a fierce air gust by aiming bow at a slight angle.
Triple Attack Finisher: Huang Zhong does several fast swings with his sword, then pulls out his bow to fire a single arrow. As the whole team finishes up, a bright pillar of light generates at the intersection of their attack range and engulfs the surrounding area. Enemies caught by the blast sustain massive damage while being flung to the air and set on fire.
Unique Triple Attack: Low Health + L2 + R2 + Circle: If Huang Zhong performs a triple attack with Xiahou Yuan and Ina, the three of them will eschew their usual combo motions in favor of pelting the enemy with volleys of arrows infused with energy. The ensuing barrage leads to them producing a pillar of light accompanied by more arrows raining down near its boundary, causing massive damage to surrounding foes while setting them ablaze.
Strategy - Volley: Increases damage inflicted by all allied projectile weapons including guns and cannons.

Fighting Style

In Dynasty Warriors 5, Huang Zhong's arrow-based attacks benefit immensely from being able to pass through multiple enemies, making his first charge extremely effective for crowd clearing. Like in the last installment, he becomes stronger if equipped with the Fire Arrow item. He also gains a useful escape maneuver in the form of his new jump charge which can also be used to slip past a blocking enemy officer.

When controlled by the AI in Dynasty Warriors 5, most of Huang Zhong's charge attacks will be imbued with the fire element by default.

Warriors Orochi has Huang Zhong gain two special attacks to further complement his fighting style. Players will find his second charge attack great for quickly slaying enemy officers if their weapon for him is stacked with certain maxed out attributes.

In Warriors Orochi 2, he has been considerably nerfed due to arrows no longer activating elemental attributes unless used as part of an enhanced charge attack.

Fighting Style

In Dynasty Warriors 6, a good majority of Huang Zhong's strong attacks are cutting waves and ice elemental shockwaves. Though he only can have up to two tomes at a time, the add-ons to his special attack compensate for that. Abilities like Rapid Shot, Heavy Bolt, and Piercing grant Huang Zhong one of the deadliest Volley specials in the game. The attack can have quicker reloads, bigger range, and have arrows explode on impact with the aforementioned abilities unlocked.

When controlled by the AI in Strikeforce, Huang Zhong's attacks will be imbued with the metal element by default.

Dynasty Warriors: Overlords

Introductory animation of Huang Zhong.
Main Attacks
Strong Attack 1 (Dash): Spin hops diagonally while firing three sonic shots in a row, then lands one last arrow forward while hunched on the ground. Deals a total of 190% attack damage. Its bonus effect enables the first hit to deal 44% attack damage to elite enemies while inflicting them with a debuff that increases the amount of damage they take by 18% for 8 seconds.
Strong Attack 1 (Break): Does a sweeping spin kick that deals 150% attack damage to foes. Its bonus effect allows it to deal an additional 380% attack damage on hit and greatly reduces their super armor bar. The effect itself triggers every 30 seconds.
Strong Attack 1 (Armor): Turns around once before swinging bow upward to send nearby enemies airborne, then fires an arrow at them. The whole attack deals a total of 250% attack damage. Its bonus effect grants nearby friendly units a shield that adds a 9% bonus to their health, a 30% damage reduction, and a minor super armor effect. It lasts for 8 seconds and triggers every 40 seconds.
Strong Attack 1 (Gather): Spin hops diagonally and fires an arrow on the ground at point-blank range, producing a shockwave in the process. Upon standing upright once more, Huang Zhong fires more arrows at the four cardinal directions starting at the east, then to the west, south, and north. Inflicts a total of 300% attack damage to surrounding foes, though it suffers from start-up lag that renders Huang Zhong vulnerable to interruptions by enemy attacks. Its bonus effect deals an additional 18% damage to all enemy troops within range and pulls them closer to the user. The effect itself triggers every 10 seconds.
Strong Attack 2: Fires a powerful shot on the ground while standing on one leg, generating a green shockwave that deals 120% attack damage and sends enemies airborne.
Strong Attack 3: Crouches down and fires a single dizzying shot, dealing 180% attack damage in the process. Though narrow in range, it is perfect for dazing unprotected enemy officers.
Strong Attack 4: Fires multiple arrows from left to right in a fan spread. Deals 170% attack damage to foes in front of Huang Zhong.
Strong Attack 5: Somersaults into the air and lands a powered shot on the earth, creating a shockwave that inflicts 180% attack damage to enemies while lifting them up simultaneously.
Strong Attack 6: Draws bow and fires two arrows into the air with the first one done while standing and the second unleashed while in a crouched position. The first shot rains down multiple arrows on nearby enemies a few steps away from Huang Zhong, then the second shot causes several more arrows to fall directly in front of him for added protection. Deals 105% attack damage while potentially inflicting electric induction to targets.
Normal Attack 1: Shoots three arrows brimming with green electricity forward in a minor fan spread, dealing 40% attack damage to foes. Unlike most normal attacks, it won't flinch other players in competitive modes.

Fighting Style

His Online Z iteration makes use of unextended charge attacks that are simple yet effective. The sixth charge and evolution attack work best against large groups of enemies, though players are recommended to perform the combos leading up to these attacks from a slightly shorter distance when facing stronger opponents.

Introduced in Xtreme Legends.
Musou Attack - Ultra Volley (超級全壊射; lit. "Supreme Class Total Destruction Shot"): Circle: Huang Zhong rushes forth with his body before turning around and knocking nearby opponents into the air. He then proceeds to fire a radial stream of arrows at them before unleashing a large sonic shot and rubbing his back for a small bit. Although the attack's grab motion is unblockable, Huang Zhong will stumble forward if he misses.
Alternate Musou Attack - Unlimited Volley (無量超連射; lit. "Infinite Supreme Rapid Shot"): R1 + Circle: Shoots a long stream of arrows rapidly before unleashing a fierce shot forward. Each shot is elevated according to the type of surface or slope Huang Zhong stands on when performing this move. Its trajectory can also be maneuvered precisely.
Aerial Musou Attack - Arrow Rain (天空百連射; lit. "Heavenly Sky Hundred Rapid Shot"): X Circle: Systematically rains a volley of six arrows in a half circle towards enemies below from left to right, then somersaults in time to fire one last spread that produces a powerful crater impact.
Rage Attack: Fires multiple arrows down and up repeatedly, then charges forth in short bursts before repeating the cycle. The move ends with Huang Zhong launching scattering shots from right to left while releasing a massive radial shockwave around him.
True Rage Attack: If Huang Zhong accumulates 100 or more hits during a Rage attack, he will start jumping up continuously while creating wide tremors on the ground via downward shots. The barrage ends with him unleashing a few sonic-powered shots forward.

Base Game

Sample video of Huang Zhong's fighting style.

Unique Attacks
Unique Flow Attack Finisher (Podao): Enemy Airborne + Square Square Square Square: Huang Zhong somersaults higher into the air and drops down to strike the ground hard, producing a radial shockwave. Taken from the sword moveset's jump charge in Dynasty Warriors 8.
Unique Flow Attack Finisher (Tooth and Nail): Enemy Standing + Square Square Square Square: Holds bow sideways and fires four shots with the first being comprised of eight arrows and the last three only using one arrow at a time. The final shot will stun the target momentarily. Attack somewhat resembles Huang Zhong's first attack from previous titles.
Unique Trigger Attack (Podao): R1 + X: Thrusts podao on the ground diagonally to generate a radial shockwave that knocks down nearby enemies. An adapted version of the sword moveset's fifth charge from the previous two games.
Unique Trigger Attack (Tooth and Nail): R1 + Square: Fires small shockwave geysers on the ground while standing on one leg. Can easily daze multiple foes while racking up a lot of hits at the same time. Incorporates the bow moveset's second charge attack from the last two games and the first motion of its power attack from the sixth installment.

Huang Zhong then finishes the barrage by ramming nearby opponents to the air, turning around to fire multiple arrows upward continuously, then crouching down to launch a sonic-powered shot at the sky for good measure. Can inflict wind damage on targets. Combines elements of Huang Zhong's first charge from the fifth game and his Ultra Volley Musou from more recent titles.
Aerial Musou Attack: X Circle: Systematically rains a large volley of fire arrows in a half circle towards enemies below from left to right, then somersaults in time to fire one last explosive shot. Based on Huang Zhong's Arrow Rain Musou attack from past games.
