Fighting Style

Dian Wei acts as the "middle man" between the other starting Wei characters, Xiahou Dun and Xu Zhu. He isn't as fast as the former nor as strong as the latter, and his moveset is by far the trickiest of the three to master due to the amount of headbutts and punches involved. However, he can easily interrupt and stun technical fighters like Lu Xun and Diao Chan when used properly by an experienced player.

His gauntlet punches and axe combos are devastating when they connect, draining at least half a life bar when used as the player's second strike. Veteran players may also perform a quick guard with his gauntlet and gradually close the distance between longer ranged spear characters. Overall, he is a fierce attacker who has the potential to be a menace within close quarters and mid-ranged combat.

Fighting Style

Dian Wei is known for consistently being a character who emphasizes attack power over any other stat in this series. As a consequence, his defense, speed, and Musou stats are on the lower side among the cast. Fortunately, he has attacks that are easy to use in any given situation and can be effective in one-on-one duels. Due to his aforementioned weaknesses, he works best with well-timed hits. Being one of the main powerhouse officers of Wei, his strength is only slightly surpassed by Xu Zhu.

Samurai Warriors: State of War

Dian Wei gains an additional skill in this title.

Sub-Officer Skill - 2nd Chance: Revives player with half of their health refilled once they get defeated.
Charge Attack 1: Triangle: Stuns foes with a quick punch.
Musou Attack: Circle: The animations are the same as in Dynasty Warriors 4, though it cannot be stopped until the player's Musou gauge is fully depleted. Similar to the Musou attacks employed by the Samurai Warriors cast, a shockwave burst is added at the end of the finisher.
Roll: R: Rolls on the ground to evade enemy attacks.

Fighting Style

When controlled by the AI, Dian Wei's charge attacks will be imbued with the lightning element by default.

Dynasty Warriors DS: Fighter's Battle

Obstacle Effects
Obstacle Effect 1 - Earthquake: Causes the ground to shake, damaging all enemies onscreen.
Main Attacks
Normal Attack: Swings axe in a circular manner, knocking nearby targets down momentarily.
Strong Attack: Slams axe down on the earth, then picks it up with a large clump of dirt protruding from it. Dian Wei violently hurls the dirt away and delivers a powerful swipe with purple trails following its arc.

Warriors Orochi

Modified Attacks
Charge Attack 1: Triangle: The bursting stomp effect has less range than it did in the base game, though it now inflicts elemental damage. The sequel removes that trait entirely, but it can be replicated by wielding a weapon with the Almighty skill.
Charge Attack 2: Square Triangle: Functions similarly to its base game incarnation, but can break through the enemy's guard.
Charge Attack 6: Square Square Square Square Square Triangle: Functions similarly to its base game incarnation, but can no longer inflict elemental damage. This has been rectified in the sequel.
Enhanced Charge: Tapping R1 instead of Triangle for most charge attacks will enhance their damage output and hit speed while consuming a portion of Musou.
New Attacks
Special Attack: R1: Smashes the ground twice to trigger fiery explosions, launching nearby enemies to the air. Consumes 15 Musou points. Weapon elements apply for the first hit, though the sequel removes that trait for balancing purposes.
Counter Attack: Counter + R1: Hits foes with a quick horizontal swing.
Team Abilities
Ability 1 - Vitality: Increases the team's life.
Ability 2 - Potence: Increases the team's attack.
Ability 3 - Speed: Increases attack of Speed-type characters.

Warriors Orochi 2

Team Attacks
Assist Attack: Counter + L1 + Square or Triangle: Dian Wei performs his True Musou finisher to assist a teammate. Consumes a portion of Musou.
Triple Attack 1: Low Health + L2 + R2 + Circle: Slashes mightily to hurl a fierce current of air.
Triple Attack 2: Low Health + L2 + R2 + Circle: Unleashes a pillar of wind surrounding the vicinity of the user.
Triple Attack 3: Low Health + L2 + R2 + Circle: Causes a tremor by pounding the ground violently.
Triple Attack Finisher: Dian Wei launches several quick frontal chops before delivering a mighty overhead swipe on the ground. As the whole team finishes up, a bright pillar of light generates at the intersection of their attack range and engulfs the surrounding area. Enemies caught by the blast sustain massive damage while being flung to the air and set on fire.
Unique Triple Attack: Low Health + L2 + R2 + Circle: Should Dian Wei perform a triple attack alongside Zhou Tai and Ranmaru Mori, the three of them will forego their usual hit motions in favor of doing a coordinated assault. Dian Wei contributes to the combo by finishing it off with a hopping swing that releases a massive pillar of light radiating with electric currents. This attack inflicts severe damage on surrounding foes while setting them on fire.
Strategy - Face Off: Reduces overall damage inflicted upon all allied forces.

Fighting Style

When controlled by the AI in Dynasty Warriors 5, most of Dian Wei's charge attacks will be imbued with the fire element by default.

In the first Warriors Orochi game, Dian Wei can devastate foes with his third or fourth charge attacks if equipped with the right weapon attributes. Due to having quicker recovery rates than in the fifth game, there is little danger in being interrupted by enemy crowds when executing them. Due to being a technique-type character, he will be constantly consuming Musou every now and then. Players may find it worthwhile to imbue his weapon with the Absorb attribute which works wonders with his first charge attack.

Although Dian Wei is not as effective in Warriors Orochi 2 due to being nerfed, he can still pack a punch with some of his attacks.

Square Renbu String 1: Spins iron ball around in an overhead manner three times, then aims it to the lower left.
Square Renbu String 2: Similar to the first Square Renbu string, but adds several looping swings done back and forth.
Square Renbu String 3: Similar to the second Square Renbu string, but includes numerous flailing swings to the right followed by a horizontal spin kick while hopping forth.
Square Renbu String Infinite: Similar to the third Square Renbu string, but adds seven wide rotating swings done overhead while walking slowly.
Triangle Renbu String 1: Performs a shoulder ram charge.
Triangle Renbu String 2: Similar to the first Triangle Renbu string, but prolongs the shoulder ram charge.

Fighting Style

Due to the change in weaponry, Dian Wei's attack range is more shallow than his previous incarnations. However, his usual strengths and weaknesses remain. His weapon allows him to recover a little quicker than his axe, though he is best played at close range with careful usage of his power attack chain.

Executing his charges at the right time helps him offensively cover more ground and simultaneously prevents back attacks. His charge attack is best used as a starting crowd clearer until he reaches higher Renbu levels. His special move should be reserved when surrounded by overwhelming odds and multiple foes.

When controlled by the AI in Strikeforce, Dian Wei's attacks will be imbued with the fire element by default.

Main Attacks
Strong Attack 1 - Furious Throw (怒擲): Throws axe forward like a boomerang to deal damage and increase own attack power by 10% for 10 seconds. The Japanese server boosts the buff's effects to 50% for 5 seconds. Has a cooldown time of 20 seconds (12 seconds in the Japanese server).
Strong Attack 2 - Vehement Spin (悪旋; lit. "Wicked Turn"): Charges forward while doing several diagonal spin slashes in a row. Has a cooldown time of 25 seconds (16 seconds in the Japanese server).
Strong Attack 3 - Seismic Crack (地崩; lit. "Landslide"): Tosses axe on the ground, creating a fissure that blows away enemies while lowering their defense power. In the Japanese server, the debuff effect lasts for a shorter time yet has more potency to compensate. Has a cooldown time of 31 seconds (16 seconds in the Japanese server).
Strong Attack 4 - Sudden Death (天突; lit. "Sky Charge"): Launches the enemy into the air via blue vortex, then launches an upward circular swipe to knock them away. Has a cooldown time of 38 seconds (19 seconds in the Japanese server).
Normal Attack: Performs their preferred weapon's normal attack string.
Special Attacks
Musou Attack - Rampaging Tusks (牙門護荒; lit. "Fang Gate Defensive Rampage"): Strikes the ground and hurls axe forward, then grabs an enemy and slams them into the ground. Gets overriden by the character's Rage attack once all three Musou gauges have been filled up.
Musou Rage Attack: Performs Rage attack once all three Musou gauges have been filled up.
Switch Attack: Produces a powerful tremor on the ground via descending axe chop.
Special Maneuver - Repel: Knocks away surrounding foes and stuns them.

Triple Attack 2: Performs switch attack to contribute to the combo.

While retaining the same moveset from Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends, Dian Wei wields the Cerberus as their sacred treasure in this title. When equipped with it, Dian Wei can perform the following attacks listed below.

Special Attacks
Musou Attack: Circle: Dian Wei performs Rampaging Tusks as their ground Musou attack.
Normal Magic: R1 + Square: Sends out a trail of ice that freezes enemies in front of the user at a considerable distance. Can hit foes within a fairly wide range while immobilizing them. Best used for quickly thinning out enemy crowds or escaping them outright.
Charge Magic: R1 + Triangle: Locks unto visible foes and pelts them with an array of tracking ice spheres while standing still. Enemies struck by the spheres will be flung into the air momentarily before falling down. Can also hit collapsed foes, giving the attack combo building potential.
Unique Magic: R1 + Circle: Dian Wei slams one Cerberus head on the ground, causing a powerful tremor that knocks down nearby foes while dividing the head into three chained together. As each of the heads bite upward continuously, Dian Wei cuts off their chains with an axe swing, causing them to rush forward freely while mowing down on numerous enemies before disappearing.

Unique Flow Attack Finisher: Enemy Standing + Square Square Square Square: Delivers an impacting upper punch followed by a fierce leftward axe swing. Based on Dian Wei's second EX attack in Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends.
Unique Trigger Attack: R1 + X: Lands an overhead chop on the ground to knock down nearby foes. Based on the axe moveset's sixth charge attack in previous games.
Special Technique: R1 + Circle: Produces a whirlwind by tossing axe forward like a boomerang, then disperses it into radial gusts by fiercely ramming at it. Deals wind elemental damage to foes.
Musou Attack: Circle: Walks forward continuously and inflicts several overhead chops to the front in a row. Dian Wei finishes up the assault by landing a fiery diagonal slash followed by an axe toss, a headbutt attack, and a throw that unleashes flames in a radial pattern. The finisher's animations are derived from Dian Wei's Rampaging Tusks Musou attack in the eighth installment.
Aerial Musou Attack: X Circle: Throws axe like a boomerang while up in the air, causing it to travel in a circle and briefly form an electrifying whirlwind to shock foes below. Based on Dian Wei's Tornado Musou attack from past titles.
Horse Maneuvers
Summon Horse: L2: Summon horse to the battlefield. Holding L2 as the horse approaches will allow the character to automatically mount them.
Auto-Run: Riding Mode + L2: Automatically runs towards a specified destination. If a destination has not been set, the horse will instead run towards the location of the player's currently selected mission.
Sprint: Riding Mode + Direction + R1: Causes horse to run at a faster pace. Doing so depletes their stamina each time.
Jump: Riding Mode + Direction + R2: Causes horse to jump high while running.
Horse Fast Attack: Riding Mode + Square: Performs a fast and seamless attack while mounted. The attack itself varies depending on what type of weapon is equipped and whether the enemy is grounded or airborne.
Horse Trigger Attack: Riding Mode + Triangle: Performs an attack that sends enemies flying into the air. May vary depending on what type of weapon is equipped.
Horse Musou Attack: Riding Mode + Circle: Causes horse to sprint by consuming Musou instead of stamina.
Dismount Horse: Riding Mode + X: Dismounts from horse and resumes default fighting stance.
Bow Maneuvers
Shooting Mode: 🡻: Pulls out bow and assumes archery stance. Can be cancelled by tapping 🡻 again.
