Ma Su was an officer of Shu and advisor to Zhuge Liang. Liu Bei did not think that it was wise to put too much trust in his abilities, and shared his worries with Zhuge Liang, but the latter ignored the warnings, and gave Ma Su important assignments, such as the Command of the Shu army at the Battle of Jie Ting, where he defied direct orders and made the mistake of camping the Shu army on a hill, where he was surrounded and his forces were routed. A furious Zhuge Liang ordered him beheaded.
