Yuan Yi (袁遺, onyomi: En I) is an official with ties to the Yuan family. He governed Yang Province on behalf of his younger cousin Yuan Shao only to be cast out by their relative Yuan Shu.

Roles in Games

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yuan Yi primarily excels in tasks that heavily rely on intellect and charisma. Outside of his expertise, he is a poor choice for military-related tasks.

Historical Information

Yuan Yi (?-192), style name: Boye (伯業), was a scholar whose talents were noticed by Zhu Jun. Described by Zhang Chao of Hejian as loyal and competent, he worked as a tax collector for the government before joining the coalition against Dong Zhuo in 190.

After the tyrant had been disposed of, Yuan Yi was entrusted by Yuan Shao to watch over Yang Province in his stead. However, his cousin Yuan Shu forced him out before he could fully take charge of the domain. He later found refuge in Pei but was unexpectedly slain by his own men. Cao Cao notably praised him for his intellect.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The novel has Yuan Yi participate in the Battle of Hulao Pass. There, he and Qiao Mao manage to rescue Wang Kuang from a rampaging Lu Bu.
