WARRIORS: Abyss is a crossover game featuring characters from the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors. It combines the hack and slash genre the Warriors series is known for with roguelike elements. The game itself is only available via digital format.
Story
Heroes from the Three Kingdoms era and Warring States period are summoned to the underworld by a mysterious boy named Enma who asks them to help him subdue an ancient evil hellbent on conquering everything in sight. Agreeing to his request, they venture forth into the depths to face the evil entity's horde of undead creatures. Unlike in the Warriors Orochi series, story elements are limited to interacting with Enma through dialogue choices that hardly affect the narrative.

Preparations
When assembling a team of heroes, it is best to come up with a selection of characters that have great synergy potential with one another. Enma will recommend a variety of formations that fit them best, though players still have the freedom to experiment with each one to see which suits their fighting style more. Every formation has something different to offer with some emphasizing stat boosts while others provide more effective techniques. The game touts a staggering amount of 16 billion combination styles. Coming up with the best formation matters as the game's difficulty level gradually scales up in deeper areas.
Unlocking more characters requires the completion of stages and the accumulation of Karma Embers. If the player has amassed enough Karma Embers for themselves, they can open up pathways leading to different characters and form pacts with them in the Hall of Bonded Souls' Crystal Tree. Once a bond has been established, these characters can appear at Crystal Saplings and offer support to the team with their emblems. More characters being unlocked helps increase their overall parameters; those that happen to have special relations with one another will also trigger a bond bonus and raise the level cap.
Characters have their own unique passives with one person being designated as the player's avatar. They can even be strengthened with various emblems created by the spiritual energy within the underworld. These are obtained from treasure chests, defeated foes, and recruited allies. Note that the more distinguished a character is, the more emblems they tend to carry with them. Meanwhile, characters that have only one emblem are given very useful abilities to compensate. Obtaining the sufficient amount of emblems is necessary to unlock a character's unique strategy which can activate even if the person associated with them is not part of the player's current deck. Their true potential is unleashed once they gain access to their unique weapon.
While Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors characters retain their EX attacks and hyper attacks respectively, it is no longer possible for them to guard against enemy hits. However, a swift evasive maneuver has been added for this title; it enables characters to dash their way out of an enemy's hit range, but takes time to recover before it can be used again. It is also possible to cancel attacks into an evasion by tapping and resuming the canceled string afterwards with either
or
. Enemy projectiles can be deflect with attacks.
Battle
The main objective is to clear each area of enemies with a deck of six heroes before the allotted time runs out. Because no round is ever the same, players are forced to make use of different character combinations and tactics to succeed. The camera angle is set to a three-quarter perspective rather than the back-to-back view that Warriors titles are known for; this change was made to further convenience players. Enemy attacks are also telegraphed via range markers to make dodging easier.
Stages are normally comprised of 8 rounds and 4 floors. The eighth round of each floor contains a mid-boss that must be eliminated. These bosses come with a range of strong attacks and cannot be staggered. Defeating them will give players the option of choosing one of three special treasures that yield numerous effects for subsequent rounds. If the player loses, they keep some of the points earned while losing their current companions.
The game includes a hero summon feature which enables the player to deploy inactive combatants on the battlefield to provide a follow-up attack or support; summoning them requires activating the charge button input they are assigned with. For instance, if a character performs their second charge attack, they can deploy the first inactive ally to assist them. If the summon gauge is full, the player can summon every hero from their deck to fight in tandem until the gauge has been depleted, giving them an edge when things start to go awry. A quick summon feature is also available, though it has a cooldown time that prevents it from being exploited.
By completing floors, the player gains access to extra Crystal Saplings. Some areas have missions that yield rewards when completed, though these usually come with more challenging hordes of enemies to deal with. At times, the player will be interrupted with memories of the dead upon reaching the next round; interacting with them will present two or three choices that come with different perks and penalties before the battle starts. A shop feature in the form of the King's Cauldron is also available for players to make use of. Tears of Blood are used as currency to obtain items and formations from the shop, or they can purchase rare perks from the memories of the dead. Unique weapons can be found in chests, though these are difficult to come across in just one round.

Development
According to an interview with producer Kotaro Hirata, he came up with the idea of a roguelite title similar to Hades II and Vampire Survivors right after finishing work on WILD HEARTS. He sought to present two different proposals for it to the company, but ended up choosing the prototype for WARRIORS: Abyss after noticing how compatible the Warriors format was with the roguelike genre. Development officially began on February 2024 and lasted for about a year.
Upon deciding on Abyss as the game's main title, Hirate initially considered having the Greek underworld Tartarus serve as an appropriate setting. However, he eventually opted to go for an Eastern motif instead because it was easier to work with and would appeal more to the Asian gaming market. As a result, the Buddhist god of Hell was turned into an approachable guide of sorts for players to easily identify with.
To make the roguelite aspect of WARRIORS: Abyss, the development team had to simplify the controls while providing numerous ways to build advantageous character builds. They also worked on making the graphical effects as bombastic and flashy as possible to make the game exciting.
