One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4

From Koei Tecmo Wiki

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 (ワンピース海賊無双4, Wan Pīsu Kaizoku Musō Foa, lit. "One Piece: Pirates Unmatched 4") is the fourth entry in the One Piece: Pirate Warriors series.

Gameplay

  • Characters can now jump with X, akin to several other mainline Koei Warriors titles of their own IPs.
    • Several characters' movesets are revamped to incorporate midair dashes and various new midair attack inputs. Some characters have singular midair attacks, while others have complete aerial strings.
    • Pressing X during a string will initiate an air-juggling jump-launcher that carries both the player and their targets into the air, akin to an offensive jump cancel mechanic.
    • Several characters' base movesets on the ground have been revamped via some moves having new animations, or old-recurring inputs being replaced with other attacks, and so on.
  • A stamina system is introduced. Certain actions, such as Power Dashing, will consume stamina.
    • Stamina restores gradually when not attacking.
  • The Power Dash is a new dashing move that allows the character to knock back enemies while moving. It can be done both on the ground and in the air. It is performed by pressing Circle. Holding down Circle will increase the distance traveled. Power dashing consumes stamina. This is similar to the boosters from Dynasty Warriors: Gundam.
  • Charge Attack inputs (Triangle) no longer have their own inverted strings. While some still possess their own routes, others function more like unique singular attacks akin to other games (or in some cases, the prior R1 Special Skill mechanic or the first installment's Triangle attacks).
  • Special Moves/Attacks are now revamped alongside the aforementioned Special Skill mechanic, via pressing R1 and a face button (Square, Triangle, Circle, or X). Every character has multiple special moves, though only a maximum of 4 can be equipped and used in battle. These can be customized/assigned to any R1 input.
    • Each special move has its own gauge which must be full before the move itself can be performed. Each gauge is filled by dealing and receiving damage.
    • Each special move has its own star rating, which indicates the power of the move. Each move can be upgraded and leveled up in the characters' growth maps.
    • Two or more of their specials are reminiscent to the traditional Musou attack or the original Circle special attack, with the same cinematic sequence style while also slowing down time during the animation.
    • One of their specials is instead a similar move akin to the above, but is mainly used to access special modes/transformations for a set duration known as a Full-Force Burst, replacing the original STYLE/HAKI Action and Kizuna Rush from the prior games.
      • This is a powered-up state which will boost the characters' stats. Some characters will Change Form, which will change their appearance, as well as change some of their attacks and combos.
      • During Full-Force Burst, the special move gauge tied to its input will gradually decrease.
        • Both a cinematic special and a Full-Force Burst however, will not have their cinematic angles occur depending on where the camera is angled in regards to walls, much like in the 2nd title.
    • A number of string/charge attack finishers from the prior title(s) for returning characters are now assigned to Special Attacks.
  • Giant enemies are now added to the game similar to the Mobile Armor bosses in Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2.
    • Giant enemies will have an Armor Gauge, which must be reduced in order to deal meaningful damage to them.
      • When the Armor Gauge is reduced to zero, the giant enemy will lose one Shield Icon and enter a Broken Armor state. This is when they can be staggered, and will take more damage than normal.
      • Whittling down their number of Shield Icons will render the enemy into a Stunned State,
  • Maps are now more traditionally styled akin to the other mainline Koei games, where they are no longer grid-based with bases connected by corridors, and are now shaped in various forms.
  • A combo-hit-counter is now added.
  • The Crew Level system makes a return.
  • The leveling system has been omitted, and has been replaced by a new progression system. Characters are now upgraded through skill trees known as "Growth Maps". Players spend Beli and coins to upgrade skills and unlock pathways to new skills. New Maps can be unlocked by raising a character's Crew Level.

Modes

Dramatic Log

This is the main story mode of the game, which allows players to experience the story of One Piece from the Alabasta Saga and into the Wano Arc. At the time of the game's release, the current Wano Arc had yet to be concluded in its original source material, so an original ending was created for this game. Two player co-op is available.

Players are encouraged to prioritize playing through this mode first, to unlock additional characters for other modes. Once the time-skip versions of the Straw Hats are unlocked, the player can use them in earlier stages in this mode.

Free Log

This is essentially Free Mode using stages from Dramatic Log. Characters who have been unlocked but have yet to become available in other modes can be used here.

Treasure Log

This mode is similar to Dream Log from the previous game. It presents a series of challenge stages that can be completed with any character. Additional playable characters that cannot be unlocked through Dramatic Log can be unlocked here by fulfilling certain requirements.

The format of this mode is shown as a list of missions with various themes and degrees of difficulty. The missions are divided into three categories of increasing difficulty: East Blue, Grand Line, and New World. After a mission is beaten, grades are assigned based on the player's performance throughout the mission, based on the KO count and the time it took for the mission to be completed. The highest rank is S.

Missions in Treasure Log are centered around various themes, and the scenarios/maps are generated at random. Hypothetical dialogue can occur between characters here, even between those who have never canonically interacted before in the source material, leading to some potentially interesting conversations.

Online

This game features 4 different online game modes, in which players can play with other people through an internet connection. They are:

  1. Giant Boss Battle: Up to 4 players cooperate to defeat a giant enemy.
  2. Joint Bounty Battle: 4 allied players try to survive and raise their own bounty.
  3. Timed Defense Battle: 4 allied players defend a territory under a time limit.
  4. Territory Battle: Three teams of 4 players compete against each other in a territory battle. Whichever team has the most territory at the end wins.
