From Koei Tecmo Wiki

Gyūki (lit. Ox Ogres) are supernatural monsters found in legends and myths throughout Japan. Their forms and details of their habitats vary, but their consistent traits includes their poisonous breath and their hunger for human flesh. They lurk in deep water brooks to prey on bystanders or unwitting travelers. Koei titles prefer to follow the Heian period interpretation of their stature as imposing oxen demons.

Copies of him and Dodomeki in the Warriors Orochi series serve as members within the Orochi forces. To unlock him in his debut, the player must collect 25 treasures. They were only playable in the Versus and Survival modes for their debut with incomplete movesets. Musou OROCHI Z allowed them to be playable in every mode with complete movesets. Gyūki can be unlocked as a playable character in Warriors Orochi 3 by viewing at least one ending.

Within the Harukanaru Toki no Naka de series, Gyūki are called Ushi-oni (formatted in kunyomi instead of onyomi) and are a common vengeful spirit for most of the games.

Character Information

Role in Games

In both Warriors Orochi 2 and Warriors Orochi 3, Gyūki, as well as several Gyūki generals appear at the side of the Orochi army. In the English script, , the Gyūki generals are named after several metals. In Musou OROCHI Z, he shares a Dream Mode stage with Da Ji and Dodomeki detailing how they freed Orochi from his prison at the Wuhang Mountains. Once the player unlocks him and Dodomeki in Warriors Orochi 3, they both appear in the player's camp to offer their services as a means to "make amends". In Ultimate, however, he joins Da Ji in deserting the Coalition to search for a voice of Orochi at Hinokawa.

In Warriors Orochi 4, he and Dodomeki were displaced from the rest of the Orochi army and were instead content to wander the land with Himiko. When Himiko comes into conflict with the Coalition forces and ends up joining Da Ji, he and Dodomeki are inadvertently pulled back into the demon army. Like the rest of the demon army, once the real Orochi is defeated at Olympus, they join the Coalition to prevent themselves from getting caught by Odin's plan to destroy the world. During Ultimate, he and the rest of the Demon army will surrender to the Coalition at Kanegasaki instead, and rush to protect Kaguya from Hades's attack at Changshan.

During one of the side stages, he and the Demon army will intercept Odin's attack on Ōsaka Castle and will defeat the god even after he summons illusions of both Orochi and Orochi X against them.

Not much of Gyūki's personality is explored outside of battle in the first few games. He is shown being brutish, cruel and spiteful towards his enemies while fighting. In the third installment of the series though, while he does try to come off as tough to his new human allies, once having joined the coalition, it is shown he is actually one who is easily excitable and a tad hyper. In the Japanese script of the game when speaking he uses female pronouns and adjectives adding a slight air of innocence to his character.

Gyūki shares an unexpected bond with Rachel. In Ultimate, he develops a friendship with Hundun as well. In the fourth game, Xu Zhu teaches the demon how to properly farm and eventually earn his own keep for his weight of food. He is also enchanted by Meng Huo's stories about the exotic wildlife of Nanzhong, particularly those of elephants.

Character Symbolism

His fourth weapon is named after the place where departed souls live, Yomi-no-kuni. The place of the dead is known to have dead spirits and various monstrosities lying in wait. The second part of his weapon's name is a different name for Ama-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi, Tsumugari-no-Tachi. It implies he wields the underworld's version of the divine blade, making a weapon capable of fearsome destruction.

Triple Attack 2: Surrounds the user within a large tornado.

Warriors Orochi 3

Hyper Armor works the same as before, but getting staggered or stunned causes subsequent normal attacks to normally flinch on grounded hit for the combo.

Grounded Type Action: R1: Jumps up to then body-slam the ground for a brief yet large dusty quake.
Midair Type Action: X R1: (Ultimate only) Tosses weapon on the ground to produce a giant fissure.

Horse Moveset

Triangle: horse rears its legs and smashes the ground with its front hoofs.
Square, Square, Square, Square, Square, Square: Series of swings to his right.
Triangle after any first four normal attacks: Pounds the ground with his club's top.
Circle: Swings his club once as his horse stampedes forward while surrounded by a destructive energy.

Fighting Style

While his size is large, Gyūki's attacks with the exception of his jumping attacks are all painfully slow but are compensated by the large aoe of his attacks, most notably his C3, and the super armor of being a Power character keeping him from being interrupted. In Warriors Orochi 2, Gyūki's attack speed issue can be solved through the combination of Almighty and Agility. He has no such luck, however, in Warriors Orochi 3 and Warriors Orochi 4 as his attacks still come out too slow to deal with larger mobs by themselves.

Because of this, Gyūki's only usable offense in Warriors Orochi 3 becomes his jump charge, which now procs elements. Unfortunately, the Dragon's Eye does not allow jump-cancelling from his jump charge, so Gyūki cannot repeatedly perform the attack in quick succession. Ultimate's addition of his midair R1 Type Action is also a further buff as he can perform it before actually finishing with his JC which expands his offense. In Warriors Orochi 4, the introduction of Sacred Treasures also minimizes the down time between JC and his attacks.
