Gongsun Xu (onyomi Kōson Shoku) is the son of Gongsun Zan. He was sent by his father to meet up with Zhang Yan and relieve Yijing, but failed and eventually fell in the final battle. He doesn't appear in the novel.
Roles in Games
In Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends, Gongsun Xu and Tian Yu will attack Yuan Shao's forces from the west at Jieqiao before Yan Gang arrives with the main cavalry unit. In Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends, Xu accompanies his father to Changshan, joining him as part of the first reinforcements to arrive in aid of the Heishan Bandits.
Gongsun Xu first appears in the sixth installment of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He is a decent general with balanced stats, mostly ranging in the mid 50s to High 60s. His best stats are War and Charisma, making him a good supporting general suited for military tasks. Domestically, he isn't the best choice but not a bad one either.
Historical Information
Gongsun Xu was from Liaoxi Commandery in You Province. In 198, his father was surrounded by Yuan Shao at Yijing. With Gongsun Zan's forces unable to break the siege, Zan sent Gongsun Xu to Zhang Yan in order to seek reinforcements from the bandit warlord. Zhang Yan commanded 100,000 soldiers while Xu himself commanded 5,000 cavalry and was trying to arrange a time to arrive with said reinforcements, but a letter sent to communicate when to expect the reinforcements was intercepted by Yuan Shao's forces. As a result, Yuan Shao was able to lure Gongsun Xu and Zhang Yan into an ambush, defeating their army. This was the last hope for Gongsun Zan, who perished in the final conflict. Gongsun Xu was defeated and was soon killed by the Xiongnu Tuge tribe to appease Yuan Shao.
