Fang Yue (方悅, onyomi: Hō Etsu) is a fictional character who appears in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel and its Koei adaptations.

Role in Games

Fang Yue debuted in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series in the eight entry and has appeared in every entry since, except of the twelfth entry in which the list of characters in the game has been reduced. Fang Yue usually begins the game as a free officer but will either join Wang Kuang's force automatically when Wang Kuang becomes a warlord, or be set to Wang Kuang's force by default in later scenarios. Fang Yue is typically an above average officer with a WAR stat usually around 80, and is best at leading spear troops. Fang Yue only appears in very early scenarios due to his death at the Battle of Hulao Gate.

In the thirteenth entry, Fang Yue begins the game as a free officer or in service to Wang Kuang and is sent forward to stop Lu Bu during the Battle of Hulao Gate event, but is killed in a single blow. The Battle of Hulao Gate event will not happen if Fang Yue is the player character. Although the cinematic does not change, Fang Yue will survive the Battle of Hulao Gate if he is a Bond officer of the player character (Friend, Spouse, etc.).

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Fang Yue appears only in chapter 5 of the novel as a general under Wang Kuang during the coalition against Dong Zhuo. During the Battle of Hulao Gate, Wang Kuang witnessing Lu Bu approaching with a force of 3000 horsemen turns to his soldiers and asks "Who dares go out to fight him?" and Fang Yue valiantly rushes ahead with a spear in hand to face Lu Bu. However Fang Yue is killed by Lu Bu in only five bouts, and Wang Kuang's troops are scattered by Lu Bu's attack.
