Dynasty Warriors: Online

From Koei Tecmo Wiki
(Redirected from Dynasty Warriors Online)

Dynasty Warriors: Online was a multiplayer online installment of the Dynasty Warriors series. It served as a renewed version of Shin Sangoku Musou BB on 2007. Like its predecessor, it used Dynasty Warriors 5 as the basis for its graphics and battle system. The major difference is that it required less hardware specifications and had no monthly fees for basic fights, meaning players were free to participate in battle any time they wanted. Musou Coins served as the newest in-game currency with migrating players receiving ten times that amount to compensate for the change in game versions.

The Premium Box edition for Shinshou Ranbu came with a serial code containing eleven in-game items, three different clothing pieces for both genders, additional war funds, a strategy guide, a deluxe poster, and a soundtrack CD.

The PlayStation 3 version of Souten Ranbu, referred to as Heavenly Strike in North America, included a serial code filled with various items as well as clothing parts based on Lu Bu and Diao Chan.

The standard edition of Ryujin Ranbu, also known as Dragon Strike in North America, contained a serial code filled with war funds, extra clothing parts, furniture, fully-forged weapons, and miscellaneous consumables. Its Treasure Box edition included a notebook, a soundtrack, a materials collection book, a special booklet, and a serial code with the aforementioned content plus more high-leveled items. The fifth anniversary pack comes with a serial code containing tons of in-game items including a new weapon type for players to make use of.

Services for the Korean and North American versions ended on July 29, 2010 and January 1, 2014 respectively. The game itself was also replaced with Shin Sangoku Musou Online Z.

Wushuang served as the Taiwanese server's image song and had been performed by Jay Chou.

Changes

Preparations

The game preserves the same character customization features and quasi-RPG mechanics offered in Shin Sangoku Musou BB, though a number of updates over the years have expanded them greatly. For PlayStation 3 users, they require accounts from both PlayStation Network and GAMECITY. Characters created in the console ports cannot be used in the PC version and vice versa. This restriction also applies to Musou Coins spent on either port. Despite the aforementioned limitations, both PlayStation 3 and PC gamers can still interact with one another due to sharing the same servers.

It is now possible for players to edit their facial features, skin complexion, hair, and much more by visiting the beautician in town. She also offers cosmetic options that the default character setting lacks. Note that her services require the consumption of Musou Coins.

Additional furniture objects come with new functions to improve the player's experience within the game. The delivery desk allows them to send weapons, equipment, and consumables to registered friends instantly in exchange for war funds. Tool shelves and cabinets enable newly-added consumables to be stored and organized into different categories. Later updates provide more options to further renovate one's home. The Dragon Strike expansion allows players to grow plants and crops outside of their home while also tending to those owned by friends. There is a limit to how much care a garden is able to receive per day. Crops can later be harvested and used as materials for crafting. Ornamental furniture may also be placed within garden spaces.

Weapons may be further enhanced or repaired through new forging options, one of which applies special buffs on occasion. Two new weapon modification options are available: simple modifications merely cost war funds whereas full modifications require the consumption of Musou Coins. Higher-ranked weapons have also been included and there is more space for them in the armory. In Dragon Strike, rare gems can be imbued on weapons to further heighten their base stats. Like with other forging methods, there is a chance that improving weapons may outright fail.

Crafting allows the player to synthesize items into completely new products for different purposes. Aside from creating enhanced versions of pre-existing items, various outfits may also be dyed in different colors or imbued with elemental attributes. When deciding to craft something, one may opt to buy the necessary tools and use them at home or utilize communal tools near the market for a fee. New crafting recipes are constantly being added through each update.

Cooking is another form of crafting used to boost various stats or invoke other positive buffs. Made available by installing tea tables near the garden, players can invite friends over to share a meal and benefit from their effects. This feature was introduced in one of the later updates for Dragon Strike.

Players can now join guilds or form their own with three other people. Guilds provide members with opportunities to communicate with one another more privately with higher guild levels enabling them to share war funds and items. They also have the privilege of participating in guild-only melee battles and drills. It also provides options for tracking down guild members and expanding the guild to make room for more people. A recent update allows guilds to set up their own profiles and showcase achievements to attract more members. At some point, a guild reward system was also included to further encourage more members to actively contribute in exchange for numerous benefits.

More experienced gamers with sufficient ranking can opt to offer themselves as mentors for beginners by putting themselves in a mentor list. This system is meant to not only provide new players with assistance regarding the game, but also foster better communication between veterans and beginners.

Animals can now be recruited as bodyguards on the battlefield. Some may even serve as mounts to make up for the lack of rideable horses in this game. This feature had been added due to requests made by players who wished to own pets within the game. The level cap of lieutenants was also raised to further boost stats and alter their appearances.

The Heavenly Strike expansion introduces a neutral city hub called Shangri-La which allows people from different factions to communicate with one another. The hub contains a peach garden where players can form friendships with one another. Alliances may also be formed between friendly factions, enabling affiliated users to cross over to each other's domain.

The Japanese server provides additional perks for people who play the game in any of the internet cafes officiated by the company. These perks include doubling the chances of finding precious stones, increasing the amount of righteousness gained by 50%, making domestic affairs twice as effective, and gaining access to exclusive missions from the internet cafe-only NPC.

Mechanics

Dynasty Warriors: Online utilizes the same fighting system as its predecessor albeit with several changes and improvements. For one, players can now attach different emblems into their weapons to perform completely new charge attacks. This gives certain weapon movesets additional utility when dealing with certain situations. New updates steadily introduce more weapons over time. Based on observations and customer feedback, many of them have also received new charge extensions and balance buffs via updates; the developers sought to provide these alterations in hopes of further diversifying the weapon moveset system and preventing players from overusing certain types of weaponry.

New to the game are spirit items that enable players to transform into unique generals like Zhao Yun and Lu Bu. These are obtained by defeating the actual officers themselves in campaign battles. The transformation lasts for 30 seconds and provide level 3 armor status while retaining the player's base stats.

More emoticons are made available by clearing certain time-limited quests. They tend to vary in terms of animation, though a lot of them often match an event's chosen theme.

The chat system now comes with an array of commands to make interaction more effective towards one or multiple players.

Full Command Short Command Function
/guildsay /gs Sends message to all members of the player's guild.
/party /p Sends message to everyone within the same party.
/reply /r Sends response to the person who last messaged the player.
/say /s Sends message to other players nearby.
/shout None Sends message to all other players over an entire zone.
/tell /t Sends message to a designated player.
/ttell /tt Sends message to only the currently targeted player.

Battle

Battles have been further refined, each one with its own changed rules and rank requirements. Note that players are now required to clear training quests before they can be deployed in the following battles below. This was added to ensure more beginners would have a stronger grip on the game's mechanics without interfering with more experienced players. Campaign battles continue to emphasize the need to capture or defend cities for affiliated factions, though the Battle of Guan Du scenario has since made some alterations to freshen things up. For one, NPC factions led by minor warlords like Liu Biao or Ma Teng are present; their defeat may cause a unique general within their forces to join one of the main factions.

Cities ripe for the taking are now divided into two types: major cities and target cities. Major cities are extremely vital to each faction as losing them reduces their population growth by 50%. Meanwhile, target cities boost an army's population growth by 40% if taken successfully. Fighting far from affiliated cities will lower morale for the player's side. To make things more even, advantages and disadvantages gained from the difference in national power are abolished.

A suzerain-vassal system is also put into place with defeated forces becoming a vassal state for the faction that took their remaining city. Players belonging to vassal states are at a disadvantage as the domestic effects of their own forces are thereby nullified. To participate in campaign battles, a ranking higher than Lieutenant Major is necessary. The Battle of Chi Bi scenario gives ranking more impact by allowing players with higher titles to deal more troop damage towards the opposing side.

Players are now able to customize victory conditions, rules, handicaps, and other criteria in melee battles. This provides them with a means to fight on their own pace or level without being too overwhelmed. A recent update adds power conflict levels to decide on matching players who are closer in strength against one another. Melee levels now determine which type of battlefield competitors can partake in. Capture battles also include a new type of base where the player must defeat four Juggernaut units.

Mock battles are a variation of melee-style fights where players from the same faction compete against one another. Arena, on the other hand, enables characters from different factions to fight without the results affecting their melee levels. Power-up items that appeared in past titles make a return for this gameplay mode, though a recent update has them pop up in other types of battles as well. For players looking for a change of pace, they may opt to take on missions where the goal is to simply transport treasure to an allied base as quickly as possible; the more treasures a character is carrying, the more sluggish and vulnerable they become towards enemies. Also, a slew of new time-limited quests are made available for players to take advantage of.

Showdowns are larger versions of melee battles that comprise of twelve different players on two sides fighting one another. With conflict points at stake in this type of battle, participants are required to show up at the designated time in order to join. Participation is also on a first come, first served basis with players who arrive early getting top priority. Because teamwork has more importance in this mode, policy settings can be used to convey to others what particular strategy the player is trying to go for. Stone pillars are used to change policies on the fly during the actual showdown.

A new quest type called Chronicles involves fighting alongside various unique generals during historical or romanticized events. Usually more difficult to clear, they become accessible after fulfilling certain conditions. Once a Chronicle quest has been finished with an S ranking, they can be viewed again using a bookshelf at home. Note that these quests do not influence domestic ratings. New updates periodically add new Chronicles featuring characters from various factions.

The Dragon Strike update adds a battle royale-like mode known as Survival Match. It essentially pits 25 different players against each other in a bid for survival, making it an enjoyable feature for those who prefer an alternative to team battles. In the event that there are not enough players, NPC officers will instead take their place. Set in a special arena zone, a circle wall of fire eventually envelops the area and gradually closes in as time passes, further pressuring participants to finish each other off before they are trapped within a narrow platform. Jars containing restorative items are present. Transformation items may also be found, turning players into peons, animals, or even unique officers.

Drill battles now offer a spectating feature where other players can view spars from a third party perspective. It is also possible to chat with participants as a spectator. The purpose of this function is to provide entertainment for those who need rest from actual combat and to give more experienced gamers a chance to observe how different players fight effectively.

A new sorting invitation system makes it more convenient to have friends join in on melee battles and drills. This works well in gathering people who more or less share the player's rank level.

If the player has completed their training regimen, they will receive a Musou Board which provides various consumable items daily. To get an item, turn in the board to a commanding officer and have them put a stamp on a slot. The amount and variety of items gained from the Musou Board have also been revamped during the latest update for the Dragon Strike expansion.

The Heavenly Strike update allows players to work together with different factions when exploring the Kunlun Mountains. This gameplay mode is limited to four players and provides a dungeon exploration experience not found elsewhere within this title. The mountain range is divided into different zones that escalate in terms of difficulty. Time limits are imposed for both adventuring and staying in the mountain itself. To advance deeper into the mountains, players must pick up peach talismans found within jars to extend the amount of time they have. Aside from obtaining rare and valuable items, the area is filled with ancient coins that can brought to the antique dealer or peach nymph for various rewards. A recent patch allows players to better sortie with one another despite being on different mountain zones.

For players looking for a greater challenge, they may opt to collectively fight giant beasts representing the Four Gods. Introduced in the Dragon Strike update, these divine beings are encountered in the top areas of the Kunlun Mountains. They come with very damaging moves that cover a wide area, but their large size means that multiple players can easily attack them in tandem. These beasts may also be momentarily weakened by fulfilling certain tasks like destroying a number of enemies or occupying a specified base. Defeating them yields raw materials used to create rare costumes or enhance the base stats of weapons.

Characters

Officers

Because this game has a number of different scenarios, the list of officers per faction continues to change. Note that minor factions mostly led by NPC units cannot be joined no matter what. Characters with bolded names are the commanders of their respective factions. Those marked with a star have innate Hyper Armor when confronted in battle. Generic commanders are marked with a circle.

After Dong Zhuo's death, Lu Bu set out to make his mark on the world as a would-be conqueror. However, this only spurred the other warlords to stay alert and make their own moves to seize the land one way or another.

Development

As plans were put into place to bring Shin Sangoku Musou BB overseas, an interview with Choi Yun-seok, general manager of CJ Internet Japan, and Koei employee Kazuhiro Fujishige helped shed some light on the matter. They noticed how Japan's infrastructure for online games had rapidly improved and decided to enact changes that would attract more customers. One of these changes was the removal of the ISP restrictions. They also decided on a new payment system which enabled them to offer basic free play for gamers in order to garner more interest.

When it was decided that a console port of the game would be made, the producer wanted to make it more user-friendly for beginners while keeping its contents the same as the PC version. To that end, they painstakingly ensured that players of both ports would have the same gaming experience. One of the biggest challenges for them was making the game more presentable for those who lacked access to high-definition televisions. They also sought to keep updates free of charge.

During an interview that focused primarily on the Heavenly Strike expansion, both the producer and developer stated they wanted to further expand the "one warrior worth a thousand" concept by synergizing it with camaraderie between gamers. Thus, they came up with the idea of a new hub and gameplay mode where more player interactions are made possible.

The development team eventually decided to expand the concept of connections even more in the Dragon Strike expansion. At the Net Entertainment Festa in Akihabara, they introduced new features meant to instill teamwork and communication while promising to deliver more quality of life improvements.
